I am having troubles with all KDE apps since a recent upgrade to 3.5.7 from
3.5.5. At first I thought it was related to all the upgrade troubles with
expat (which was upgraded to version 2 at the same time) however I am not so
sure anymore.
'emerge -puD' reports nothing to update,

I have installed E17 and it's very cool, especially with composite. I am
running into a problem though. When running KDE apps, from time to time, I
have to remove ~/.ICEauthority to get them to start. Is this something I'll
have to live with? Or, is there a fix?

You should try openssh and it's simple tunnel and ftp over it or any other
networked file system. If you really need to use nfs set it to use tcp.
