Switching VTs works for me using ctrl+alt+f#. I can't figure out which setting is allowing me to do it, if any. Grab keyboard when active and focused wasn't it. I've had to use this to kill spicy a few times as if you fullscreen a guest (on my install, at least) you can't get out. I wasn't aware
