Occasionally there is a problem with a new feature. That gets fixed and everyone is happily using it. By disabling features you haven't got an understanding off and don't even bother to check if it's fixed, you are literally shooting yourself in the foot. Why not pick either of the 2 advices people have given you here and grow up. To make it easier, here are the 2 options: 1) Start using MS Windows as it's designed for people like you who refuse to learn new things 2) Actually learn how to use a computer -- Joost > > > ## > EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--jobs=1 --quiet-build=n --verbose" > > FEATURES="sandbox distlocks nostrip parallel-fetch userfetch userpriv > usersandbox splitdebug > -preserve-libs" > > ##

Jeez, I've had things go sideways before, hal comes to mind, but I don't use a script like he does and bring it on myself. Heck, I can remember when the update process was emerge sync and emerge -uvp world. Look at list, then remove the -p part. Then pray there was no build failure from a bug. Then portage, both the emerge command and the tree and all its ebuilds, started improving. Slots came along and a whole ton of other things. Nowadays, eix-sync && emerge -uvaDN world and generally, it's ready to update. Once that is done, a little housekeeping and it's done. Of all the problems I have, it is usually something I overlook that I did or just a general build failure. Sometimes a retry gets it going again. Thing is, emerge has changed over the years. All of us have adapted to those changes and adapted our own systems and process to what works. Some systems may be fine with a backtrack that is the default. Some may need it set to 30, some 100. Thing is, setting it to 0 to disable it or something, that won't likely work to well. Grimes seems to want to disable some of the new features thinking it will make it easier but it's making it harder. Portage/emerge will do the heavy lifting if you let it. Anyway, I'll give it another go or two and after that, he will have to figure it out on his own. I like helping when I can but sometimes, you just have to let them get hungry enough to fish for themselves. lol Dale :) :-)

I don't use it, never have and don't have any plans to use it either. Sounds like windoze may be more to your liking tho. It updates itself without you having to do anything. I do have friends that use windoze so I have a idea on how it works. Recent changes in emerge/portage did not break anything otherwise there would be dozens of other people on this list having the same type of problems you are having. So, it's not emerge/portage. The problem, as has been said many times before, is your script and your update process. That is your problem. I might also say, yes, you decide how to run your computer. That also means that when you use something such as the script you posted a while back, you can also keep the pieces as well. Even a developer will tell you that. >> Here's a idea. So, what you are saying is that the next time you run your script and thoroughly break things again, you will come back, start a new thread griping and moaning about the problem you brought on yourself? How lovely. Just so you know, a couple people posted that they blacklisted you. They won't see your emails any more. I'm getting close to it myself. I keep hoping it will get through to you that you need to change what YOU are doing instead of doing what you want which breaks things. My .conf file is simpler than yours: ctrl_interface=DIR=/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel network={ ssid="foo" scan_ssid=1 key_mgmt=WPA-PSK psk="bar" }

[gentoo-user] Problems with CUPS and Brother DCP-L8400CDN printer
Hello. I've tried to install a Brother DCP-L8400CDN network laser printer on my Gentoo. I've followed Gentoo Wiki instructions and have used official Brother's driver. The CUPS works fine with my other printer one old HP 2600N, but when I send any doc to Brother, the printer prints a blank page with the follow message on top: lpadmin -p DCPL8400CDN -E -v usb:/dev/usb/lp0 -P /usr/share//cups/model/Brother... Very strange because my printer is a network printer and not USB printer. I've tried a lot to install this printer. Anyone can hep me? Thanks. Raphael Mejias Dias

[gentoo-user] xbmc-13 upgrade to kodi-14 - no physical keyboard input
I finally got around to upgrading all my frontends to kodi-14, and none of them have any usb keyboard input. I have a physical keyboard plugged in and it doesn't respond to keypresses. USB support is built in as the mouse and IR work. The onscreen keyboard works too, but for some reason the physical one doesn't. I've noticed some USE changes but none of them "stick out" as a "must-have-for-physical-keyboard" requirement. Anyone come across this or have any suggestions? The old xbmc-13 version did not have this issue. Dan

I'm not real sure which hit best but it gave me ideas to try and run with since I was stuck. I'm not even sure what all I tried now either. However, here is the output of that nifty grep command. root@fireball / # grep -r ksane /etc/portage /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/package.accept_keywords:=kde-apps/ksaneplugin-16.04.1 ~amd64 /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/package.accept_keywords:=kde-apps/libksane-15.08.3-r1 /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords/package.accept_keywords:=kde-apps/libksane-16.04.1 ~amd64 /etc/portage/package.use/package.use:kde-apps/libksane minimal root@fireball / # I did have more than that but I removed everything related and started over. That was the end result, after emerge spit out some more stuff. I think I had something in there that may have been needed prior to this but was causing a problem now. Neil's reply gave me that hint. And then a package fails to build. Now to see what that is all about. :/ Thanks much to both you and Neil. :-) If only that other Alan would listen to you two. ROFL Dale :-) :-)

Yes, it has kde-apps/kdesdk-kioslaves, which I dully emerged, but this did not change matters. :-( FYI these are the packages that depclean had unmerged two days ago: 1464445881: *** emerge --ask --verbose --quiet-build=n --depclean 1464445881: >>> depclean 1464445930: === Unmerging... I have set plasma desktop as my profile, so I was hoping that I would not have veered too far off the recommended USE flags: [8] default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/plasma * Thank you for your help with this, I'll wait for another round of KDE updates in the hope that this will be fixed soon. -- Regards, Mick signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Konqueror is no longer integrated with dolphin as a file manager. When I click on Konqueror's Home Folder on its introductory page, a new window is launched with Dolphin. I believe this is due to latest Konqueror being KDE4-based and latest Dolphin (and therefore dolphinpart) being KF5-based. As a workaround, try downgrading Dolphin to 4.14.3-r1. 2. Dolphin now requires a double click to open directories. Where can I set this to a single click? I've looked in dolphin Preferences and systemsettings5 but I can't find where to change it to a single click operation. Try System Settings -> Input Devices -> Mouse -> Single-click to open files and folders. Thank you Michael, I already had this setting enabled. Clicking on the arrow at the left of the directory expands the contents of the tree, but to get into it, to descend into that level on the filesystem, you have to double click on the directory itself. Similarly, files do not open unless I double-click on them. :-/ I've noticed that 'emerge --depclean' removed kde-apps/kdebase-kioslaves and revdep-rebuild didn't bring anything else in (yet). Could this be why konqueror-dolphin integration is borked? You might have a point there. I have kde-apps/kdebase-kioslaves installed here and my konqueror works as you want your's to. My deps for that package: # equery depends kde-apps/kdebase-kioslaves * These packages depend on kde-apps/kdebase-kioslaves: kde-apps/mplayerthumbs-15.12.3 (>=kde-apps/kdebase-kioslaves-4.14.3:4[aqua=]) media-gfx/digikam-4.14.0-r1 (kde-apps/kdebase-kioslaves:4) media-sound/amarok-2.8.90-r2 (>=kde-apps/kdebase-kioslaves-4.4:4[aqua=]) and I have these konquesror/dolphin packages installed: kde-apps/konqueror kde-apps/konq-plugins kde-apps/libkonq kde-apps/dolphin kde-apps/dolphin-plugins Thank you Alan, I just re-installed konq-plugins and then kdebase-kioslaves to see what happens. Konqueror no longer opens dolphin in a separate window, nor does it open dolphin embedded in it as I want it. Instead it opens FSView - showing colourful rectangles of sizes proportionate to the size of each file. Looking under Konqueror's menu/View/View Mode, I only have 'File Size View' available. So I must be missing something else on this box. I'm on stable versions: kde-apps/konqueror-15.12.3 kde-apps/dolphin-15.12.3-r1 Interestingly, the introductory page of Konqueror shows no images for the icons ... just empty placeholders. Also, I just noticed something weird ... menu/Help/About Konqueror shows "Version 4.14.16" instead of 15.12.3. Oh well, I am assuming KDE will get better over time. O_o Does "eix kioslaves" show anything you don't have installed? A long time ago I recall installing all of those I thought I might ever need, and several issues just went away. One of the reasons binary distro users don't have as many issues as we Gentoo'ers is the binary distro installs everything from the KDE project, and we get to pick and choose, often wrongly :-) /alanm

I'm not at a Gentoo machine right now so can't give exact info, but do this: eix libksane - is 15.08.3-r1 the latest version in :4? If not, upgrade it manually and continue. - does 15.08.3-r1 have a minimal USE? If so, set it on. This often removes the clash with :5 If all else fails, quickpkg and unmerge all libksane version, emerge world and let portage fix whatever it needs to. /alanm

Newfags. Newfags everywhere. If you're going to fly by the seat of your pants you do it so other people don't have to. Complaining [too] loudly is counterproduxtive.
