If you don't *need* any fancy interface, you can't go wrong with mpv.
It is a fork of mplayer, has space to pause, arrow keys to move
back/forward a minute (up/down) or 10 sec (left/right). I've never
needed anything else.

Gnome mplayer left the tree a good long while back. It hasn't been
maintained but I kept it installed with a overlay and until recently, it
has worked well. While I like smplayer the most, I use it just for
watching TV. I have it set to play on screen 1 which is my TV and to
