Re: [gentoo-user] VFS: Cannot open root device hda6 or unknown-block(3,6)

2006-12-27 Thread Luca Botti

Funny. From kernel 2.6.18 on I receive this message when cold-booting my
(linux only) notebook.
On second try, it all works well.
Disk geometry and partitioning has not been changed. I guess a bug in kernel.

That's right, it won't. You need the map command in your grub.conf:

  map (hd0) (hd1)
  map (hd1) (hd0)

WinXP will now think that it is on the first disk and it will boot
  happily.

I recently had that message because I changed a partition's file system to
ext3 and ext3 was neither compiled into the kernel nor in the initrd file.
In this case, I think the USB Mass Storage module will need to be available
 plus the SCSI support.

Re: [gentoo-user] -mtune for P4M (dothan)

2005-11-02 Thread Luca Botti

WRONG!

dothan is not a P4M, it is a Pentium-M, like the previous, 1mb 2nd level cache
version.

So you should apply the pentium3 + sse options for gcc 3.3, or
-march=pentium-m for gcc 3.4 and upper.

The pentium4m is just a cut-down version of pentium4.

 Hi,

Trying to install gentoo on a notebook with a P4M (dothan), wondering
what -mtune should I go for, the GCC manual says:

 pentium-m
Low power version of Intel Pentium3 CPU with MMX, SSE and SSE2
instruction set support. Used by Centrino notebooks.

 pentium4, pentium4m
Intel Pentium4 CPU with MMX, SSE and SSE2 instruction set support.

 So shall I choose pentium-m? or pentium4m?

 TIA

i would suggest the move to gcc3.4.

Apart from architecture support, you will get an ABI C++ compatibility with
gcc4.

And I don't know about the ck5 sources, what it is nor what it does..

It looked pretty good, almost made me wish I had some use for a diagram

Will emerge koffice to have a look at it.

Thank you two.

Try with DIA ;-)

[gentoo-user] Problems upgrading to the kernel 2.6 - module CRC32

2005-04-17 Thread Luca Penasa
Hi everybody... im trying to upgrading my gentoo with the 2.6 kernel.
I've done everything (compilind and installing modules)... but now i
cant load the crc32 module (after the modprobe crc32 the system write
out that cant find that module--- module crc32 not found... or something
like that). into the menuconfig i've tried to configure the crc32's
compile like a module, but here i've seen that (maybe) some other kernel
feature yet selected block the crc32 Functions item. this is what i
see into the menuconfig:

--- CRC32 Funtions and i cant do this;
M CRC32 Functions
does anybody know why?
i need that module to use my usb modem ( the cxacru's connection script
give the command modprobe crc32, but the system cant find the module)

thanks a lot...
