Re: [gentoo-user] How do I get rid of colors (console and xterm)?
Thanks Ralph. In the meanwhile I had found out the "NOCOLORS" setting in make.conf which works for "emerge". man pages in color are the other most important problem right now. I will check out your suggestion. regards, chris On 7/4/19 9:19 PM, Ralph Seichter wrote: * Christian Groessler: My question is how do I get rid of colors in "emerge", "man" and other command line programs. The methods vary between command line tools. You can for example disable the 'manpager' USE flag for sys-apps/man-db. The manual page for emerge mentions different methods (search for "--color"). Depending on the terminal software you use, you might be able to select monochromatic colour profiles (iterm2 for macOS does support this). -Ralph
[gentoo-user] How do I get rid of colors (console and xterm)?
Hi, I'm new here. My question is how do I get rid of colors in "emerge", "man" and other command line programs. I managed to do in the shell (bash), but I'm somehow lost how to change it elsewhere. In "vi" I know of "syn off". See attached a pic of an xterm window, which I cannot read easily. (I'm color-blind, so this might enhance the problem.) regards, chris

I'm using a T530 with Optimus. I can only external monitors only with the NVidia-Card, not with the integrated one. I tried to get the following working roughly two years ago, but I failed: I'd like to use the internal card most of the time since I don't care about 3D acceleration but I do care alot about power saving. When using an external monitor I'd like to use the NVidia card. Currently my solution is to reboot and change bios settings, being able to switch at runtime would be a real enhancement for me. [gentoo-user] Kernel configuration management
I'm planning to migrate several computers to Gentoo. At the moment I'm running two machines with ad-hoc kernel configurations based on the kernel configuration from the installation CD (which was created for 2.6.26). In order to keep the maintenance effort for the new machines low, I would like to have a unified/baseline kernel configuration with minor adjustments for some machines. I have been thinking about this for several weeks now and came to the conclusion, that there are two sub-problems: Creating a universal kernel configuration and merging and maintaining specific configurations with the baseline configuration. The second problem can be solved by simple concatenation and/or defconfigman, kccmp and make silentoldconfig. OpenWRT does this pretty much the same way. Creating the baseline configuration is much harder. So far I tried make defconfig, the installation CD configuration and kernel-seeds.org. None really satisfied my requirements and often resulted in ad-hoc changes when I simply went through a compile and reboot cycle until everything worked. I had a look at policies of other GNU/Linux distributions [1,2] and found that I need to develop or adopt a policy for my systems (the Ubuntu modular where possible policy seems reasonable to me and probably makes the curent ad-hoc configuration unnecessary). I also thought about reusing kernel configurations from other distributions, but have some doubts about kernel version mismatches (i.e. the kernel versions of Gentoo and the other distribution differ) and about unintended implications of kernel options that I don't fully understand. The mailing list archives show that this topic has been partly discussed before (especially whether Gentoo should have a default kernel configuration like other distributions), so I don't want to start a lengthy discussion about this here. I'm more interested in what other people do for larger deployments/installations on heterogeneous hardware. [gentoo-user] www-apps/groupoffice php problem / alternative?
Hello List I'm using www-apps/groupoffice (Installed versions: 2.18.6(2.18.6)(17:26:20 18.01.2011)(-vhosts)) since years and I'm also using www-apps/mediawiki (Installed versions: 1.16.1(1.16.1)!t(12:59:13 12.01.2011)(imagemagick mysql sqlite -math -ocamlopt -postgres -vhosts)). In my /etc/portage/package.mask I had=dev-lang/php-5.3.4 and =www-apps/mediawiki-1.14.0 because I was too lazy for upgrading mediawiki (and because groupoffice needs that old php version!). Now I decided to upgrade so I removed those two maskings. I solved all update/upgrade/compile proplems so all components where finally installed successfully. But groupoffice doesn't work now. It works when I change the php version to the older one but than mediawiki will no longer work. Here's my php eselct settings: eselect php list apache2 [1] php5.2 [2] php5.3 * So I installed both versions (see eix php at the end of this mail). Now my three questions: 1. Is it possible to tell apache to use the old php for groupoffice and how can I do that? 2. For groupoffice is a newer version availlable which would use the newer php version but it's not in portage. Why? 3. Does anybody use another groupoffice? Actually I need only the feature for email. I agree with Jesús but recommend you to use rsync for backup purpose. Simple google for rsync backup script. The guide I found is here: http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/ The advanced bash scripting guide will be equally valid nowadays as it was when it was first written. A few minor edges have changed in bash in the latest times, but you are unlikely to get touched by these unless you are using some rare feature. After all, bash is compatible with the original bourne shell to a big extent, and that part of its behavior never changes. If you truly want to learn bash, I say go for it and come back when/if you have some problem.

a question to b): Can you tell me a fs that supports snappshots (I'm planing to set up a new server so you can choose a new fs... (now I am using reiserfs)) and maybe how to use it (link)? So if you say or LSM does this mean I can achieve this also woth LVM? How? thx... If you have some more tips, my current server runs on a single HDD and a daily rsync to another computer makes my backup. In my new server I'd like to improve as much as possible for as less money and energy as possible (since it's only for me...) so I thought about RAID as well. Today I'm using very old standard desktop hardware and for the new one I like to use also standard hardware so I don't know if I can afford a RAID-5 card or so... and I never made software RAID... do you have some recommendations (links?)? thx cheers Christian Am 22.12.2009 13:11, schrieb Jesús Guerrero: On Tue, 22 Dec 2009 12:20:46 +0100, Christian Könitzerch...@gmx.ch wrote: I agree with Jesús but recommend you to use rsync for backup purpose. I also agree that rsync is nowadays the way to go for general purpose backups, unless... a) the volume can't be mounted while the backup is running (not the case) b) your fs supports snapshots (or you use LVM) c) you have an rcs based solution, like svn, git or whatever else The snapshot option is the absolute safest because it ensures that all the files will be consistent, and the tar based solution is probably the worst of them unless you truly can guarantee that the files are not being written concurrently while you do the backup (i.e. the fs is not being used at all or it's mounted read only). A good practice in any case is to capture the exist status of any given tool you are going to use to ensure that no error happened. Discovering that a backup is incomplete or corrupt when you need it is a bit unpleasant to say the least. Bash can be used for that, just to put a simple example. As you say, regardless of the solution of your choice to do the actual backup there's a lot of room for improvement, automation, error loging, verification, etc. using shell scripting.

So the if clause is false although I pieped STDERR to /dev/null. except that STDERR is combined with STDOUT and sent to /dev/null so the script will never get it, the if is always true and the entire check is redundant. Better would be if echo hello|grep --color=auto l /dev/null ; then grep writes to STDERR if an error is occured. Is there a simple way to integrate a block-list of known-compromised hosts into IPtables - rather like my postfix is configured to drop connections from known spam sources from the sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org DNS block list, for example. I just don't see what blocking ssh-bruteforce attempts should be good for, at least on a server where few _users_ are active. The chance that security of a well configured system will be compromised by that is next to zero, and on recent systems it is also impossible to cause significant load with ssh-login-attempts. Also, things like fail2ban add new attack-possibilities to a system, I remember the old DoS for fail2ban, resulting from a wrong regex in log file parsing, but I think at least this is fixed now. [gentoo-user] Problems with HAL
Hi all, I have a problem with external devices. When I insert a CD/DVD into my DVD-drive I get the KDE dialog asking if I want to open a window ... If I klick yes, (or try to mount the CD from konquerors media:/ site) I get this error: A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume member Mount error name (unset) destination org.freedes ktop.Hal) On the console the user can mount the drive! Whenever I plug in my camera (Canon Powershot G2, supporte by gphoto2) I get this dialog as well but neither gphoto2 nor digikam will find the camera when started as normal user, root can download pictures with gphoto2. Now I got a new Creative Zen Vision M (mp3 player) it uses mtp and libmtp is installed, as well as amarok with the needed useflags. mtp-detect as user returns nothing, as root it returns the expected data. Neither Amarok nor gnomad2 find the player, no matter if user or root starts them. So to me this seems like a problem with user rights or HAL in general, but I do not know where to look for it. I would be very thankful for hints, as I am eager to use my brand new Vision M!!! Regards Christian -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list

Logitech protocol is for old serial mouse models from Logitech. Modern Logitech mice use either MouseMan or Microsoft protocol. 2. Most 2-button serial mice support the Microsoft protocol. 3. 3-button serial mice may work with the Mousesystems protocol. If it doesn't, it may work instead with the Microsoft protocol although the third (middle) button won't function. 3-button serial mice may also work with the Mouseman protocol under which the third button may function as expected. 4. 3-button serial mice may have a small switch at the bottom of the mouse to choose between ``MS'' and ``PC'', or ``2'' and ``3''. ``MS'' or ``2'' usually mean the Microsoft protocol. ``PC'' or ``3'' will choose the MouseSystems protocol. 5. If the serial mouse has a roller or a wheel, it may be compatible with the IntelliMouse protocol. 6. If the serial mouse has a roller or a wheel and it doesn't work with the IntelliMouse protocol, you have to use it as a regular 2- or 3-button serial mouse. [gentoo-user] OT: How to check for an existing ethernet link ?
Hi, sorry for being off topic, but I think, folks of this list have the knowledge to answer my question and I have no idea who to ask else... I need to check from within a C-program whether the computer, the program is running on (OS: Linux), is connected to the ethernet. The program is running under root privilege. Before doing anything else with eth0, I want to check the link-LED of the ethernet card...so to say. I sthere any legal way to do such things under Linux? A common way is to use the result of a single ping to known up host, in an if/else control block. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list The problem is a little different here. In principle ping'ing is a good way to test the availablity of a net-connection. No doubt! But in my case I have to avoid *ANY* timeouts (wayting for an answer or another timeout for example: the timeout of gethostbyname()) if possible. My program has to react AS FAST AS POSSIBLE on error conditions. So if I can check the availability of a net-connection without actually accessing the net and wait for an answer (or an error condition) it would be the best solution. The fact that I am urged to use UDP makes things even more difficult. I know that simply attaching the computer to a switch/hub and removing the net-plug there makes the link check worthless ... but I want to try every possibility to find out, whether there is the chance to contact the target (wrong word...sorry) without trying exactly that (or similiar), haveing to wait for an answer (or error condition) and paying the panalty of timeouts then. If there is any net-programming hyper-guru out there who knows some special tricks to achieve the shortest possible time of reaction...here is someone who will thank her/him very much for any help in advance ! :) keep hacking! mcc -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

If so, what happens, if the gentoo developpers have set -X intentionally in the *ebuild file and I have set X (globally!) in make.conf. Currently I am a little anxious to set X (or unset it or set/unset any other USE flag in make.conf due to its global character). On the other side I dont like to compile qt three times for example, due of missing USE flags...(initial compilation, openssl was missing, opengl was missing). I did: Change CHOST Update profile (unfortunately to the wrong one, but that's my fault) source /etc/profile emerge gcc (since I had to upgrade to gcc-4.1.1 gcc-config emerge -e system emerge -e world last step was interrupted several times either do to compiling failures or to package, whch wants other previous installed packages to be recompiled with other USE-flags. The overall result is a running system with some packages either installed not with all features compiled due to other packages missing due to compile failures or missing completly. This may or may be not based on the wrong profile I choose initially. I will chnage to the correct profile and recompile all affected package and will see, how far I can get then. The described procedure takes me four days with interuptions. The computer was not switched off and did its compiling task as often as possible (day and night when not stopped by an compile failure or other incidents described above. I am running an AMD 64 X2 3800+, make -j 3 and 1GB of RAM. Keep hacking, mcc Hi, I had to change CHOST during gcc upgrade. I did bootstrap.sh I did emerge -e system emerge -e world didn't work. I struggled more than one week to make it work, now I'm reinstalling from scratch. My advise: Backup all important data and excpect the fact that you could lost your system. On 9/10/06, Timothy A. I had to change package.use accordingly and recompiling makes gkrellm2 then. There are no ebuild specific default USE flags; it's your system (/etc/make.conf and /etc/portage/package.use) that hasn't X as a default USE flag (i.e. what you call -X as default, but that inversion isn't actually 100% correct). You probably configured it that way. Since the 2006.1 profile only the 2006.1/desktop has the X USE flag activated as a default setting. The server comes without it. So, either you have not yet migrated to the new 2006.1/desktop profile, or you have set up your machine as a server. -- Regards, Mick Hi Mick, you won 100 points ! :) Yes, true, I set it up as server Is the following scheme sufficient to migrate to an desktop system: ?
