The real solution would have been having a subvolume for the directory.
Subvolume deletion on BTRFS is near instant.
Same for ZFS with datasets, etc.

Your root pool setup doesn't really matter for GRUB compatibility. What's
important is that you have the proper features setup on your boot pool. That's
the one GRUB loads.
