[gentoo-user] Re: Yikes, what have I done 3 1 seconds beeps on boot
Jerry Turba [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The websites of the bios makers will have the meaning of their beep codes. There were only 3 and now 2 bios makers I believe. I seem to remember vaguely that 3 beeps indicates ram or video card problem. Did you check that they are in their slots securely? It is easy to slightly dislodge something? From my post that you quoted : ) Its an intel D850MV mobo and on intel pages it tells me 3 beeps mean a memory problem. Just in case, I removed and reseated the memory cards, also tried booting with first one then the other mem card (2 256 cards). No change in beeps. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

Attempts to reboot bring 3 1 second beeps now too. IIRC, 3 long beeps is a keyboard error. Did you remember to plug it in? do you have a spare? The answer to both is yes ... and tested. However Intel web page for my mobo says point blank it is memory, not keyboard. http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/cs-010249.htm -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
[gentoo-user] Re: Yikes, what have I done 3 1 seconds beeps on boot
It turned out to be unrelated to memory. Just as I posted it had to do with what I last had in my hand. Apparently plugging one of the IDE ribbons pulled out another tiny plug. I can't tell from the terrible little quick reference that comes with that intel board what the heck it was. It appears to be a connection for front USB 2. I've posted a picture with 2 arrows. A red one showing the memory cards to orient the viewer and a green one indicating where this tiny plug is. My grandson did the honors holding back the extra junk. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

My grandson did the honors holding back the extra junk. Most likely your cpu fan. USB errors wont stop POST. That isn't real likely since I could see the fans spinnning, hard to tell from this sorry diagram. Maybe you can tell from the picture here: www.jtan.com/~reader/exp/web_ready/dispimg.cgi Red arrow pointing to Memory cards for orientation. Green arrow pointing to plug. It was the top most of two. The single black wire running to the left of it, I believe is the bios jumper. And I thing it was not connected in the pic although it appears to be. There is no pin at that location. I was sort of disgusted with intel site in that it didn't have one of those mobo charts that shows what everything is for on the mobo. There were a few pdf links that would not resolve though. Mine came with a sorry little `quick reference' that has very little detail. Spoiled by Asus manuals I guess. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

It's fixed if you're still on the windblows box. It wasn't a problem for me because kmail threads pretty well but it might have been tough for others.
