Possible, yes.

 It seems 
 that this is a rather silly choice of packages to single out.

Do they require as many patches? Do they also rely on old (even
deprecated?) versions of a toolkit? And in how far are other mistakes
a justification for making a mistake?

Possible, yes.


But even if that occurs, it really isn't a big deal.  You'll just need
to copy the ebuild to your local overlay and preserve the distfiles.
Portage makes it really simple to manage packages outside of the main
portage tree.  And if you have a problem with the ebuild, it is fairly
easy to find someone willing to help.
