mpg321, if alsa is in your USE flags, I believe will default to alsa (something in /dev/snd versus /dev/sound), hence you're not having the problem with mpg321. To iron out if the problem is with mpg123 or with /dev/dsp (/dev/sound/dsp), can your run something like ls -l /bin /dev/dsp, and
