# emerge -s 2100 returned net-wireless/ipw2100 and
net-wireless/ipw2100-firmware
# emerge -av ipw2100 ipw2100-firmware
I rebooted .. then after turning encryption back on and then:
# iwconfig returned new interface eth2
# iwconfig
