Instead, setting the XSESSION variable in /etc/env.d is the correct way to do it. From the pkg_postinst section of the x11-apps/xinit ebuild[1]: ewarn If you use startx to start X instead of a login manager like gdm/kdm, ewarn you can set the XSESSION variable to anything in /etc/X11/Sessions/ or ewarn any executable. When you run startx, it will run this as the login session. ewarn You can set this in a file in /etc/env.d/ for the entire system, ewarn or set it per-user in ~/.bash_profile (or similar for other shells). ewarn Here's an example of setting it for the whole system: ewarn echo XSESSION=\Gnome\ /etc/env.d/90xsession ewarn env-update source /etc/profile So, creating /etc/env.d/90xsession with the contents XSESSION=Gnome (I use Gnome) did the trick. Hi, I have a strange problem with hal. To get my usb mouse (Logitech RX1000) running, I have to unplug the mouse before booting and plug it again after booting but before starting X11. This is nuisance and make a graphical login manager impossible. To make it even work I had to put Option AutoAddDevices no to my xorg.conf file What am I missing? [gentoo-user] OT -- superuser file manager access to remote via ssh with no root login?
I can't figure this one out. Have disallowed root login, public key auth. Have a bunch of random renaming to do on that machine though, so would like to point and click for a change. Is this possible? No GUI libs on the remote machine... I was thinking sshfs, but since I can't login directly as root, is there some other way? [gentoo-user] {OT} Copy the full path to clipboard from Thunar
I'm trying to copy the full path of a file from xfce4's file manager Thunar so I can paste it into a command line program. The way I found to do this was with the Configure custom actions... option like this: echo %f | xcopy -selection c I can then paste the path, but there is a newline character at the end which messes things up. Is there a better way to do this, or can I strip the newline character? - Grant
[gentoo-user] Where is my automounting coming from?
When I plug my USB cell phone into my laptop I get an icon on my xfce4 desktop which mounts the volume if I double-click it. The icon doesn't appear on another Gentoo laptop and I can't figure out why. I thought it was Thunar volume management, but that isn't installed on either system. Does anyone know what causes the icon to appear? I also don't have gnome-volume-manager installed. - Grant

Hi, The login manager slim, which is started in daemon mode, get killed when X is left by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace (zapping X) -- there is a fallback to the login of the root console instead of getting a new login screen of slim. I've got OpenOffice (compiled), v3.0.0 here. It appears broken. I haven't tried a lot of things, but this little RTF file gets it wedged right away: the console that started it says: error - missing word count in dictionary file Hash Manager Error : 4 So I'm guessing there's a problem in a spell checker. Where would I look to solve that? http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=242020 You need to emerge --sync again (there's an update to the ebuild, but no version increment IIRC) and rebuild openoffice.

Right, so I installed Beryl a little while ago on Gnome, and for the life of me I cannot either find the elusive Heliodor theming manager to apply a new theme or figure out a way to apply Beryl-specific themes using another tool. The Mac Unix experience is that grep and sed and shellscripts and stuff like that are useful. If you just want something small like exiftool then it's easy to make install it. I've found a few people referencing to a 30-day stabilization policy which basically says a package must be at least 30-days-old to be considered for stabilization, but is there any document that serves as an official guideline/checklist on how to consider to stabilize a package? Is the 30-day policy the only policy? I've been running several ~arch-ed packages that appears to be compile and runs fine on my machine and would like to vote them for stabilization. Is it enough to just open a bug issue and pray that the arch manager would notice?

Since today, whenever I try to shutdown the laptop I get messages saying waiting for net.wlan0 (XX) seconds Where X varies between 50 and 5. And I got this message for every service that is stopped. The problem looks similar to what's described here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-788186-view-next.html?sid=c27614d6088b347267495ace897e6b22 But I couldn't get a solution from that forum. It was working on network manager + ubuntu, but i cant connect on my gentoo+wicd box. Wireless 5520 Voda I Mobile Broadband (3G HSDPA) Minicard EAP-SIM Port Ideally, to manage broadband connections with network-manager. Cookie Monster is great, it's what I use. If you're familiar with the NoScript or RequestPolicy add-ons, it operates very much the same way. It lets you have fine-grained control over which cookies you allow or block, and you can allow cookies from a site for this browsing session only. Looks good. How do i set the default action? Or does it just inherit the browser setting to determine the default?

Now I'm totally confused, I can't find helpful information from Internet. I know mesa is a open source implementation of OpenGL, obviously mesa will afford OpenGL API. DRI is short for Direct Rendering Infrastructure, I have chosen options like: Device Drivers --- Graphics support --- * Direct Rendering Manager --- *ATI Radeon [*] Enable modesetting on radeon by default Does this mean that DRI libraries are built into kernel? If not, who contains DRI? Also who affords GLX libraries? Mesa or Xorg?
