Hmmm, apart from gstreamer, I have the same setup

 Here's what I've tried:
   # emerge netscape-flash
$ rm -r ~/.mozilla (and other firefox-ish or macromedia dirs)
   Restarting the box
Creating a new user and starting a KDE session as that user

Same here, so at least it can be gotten to work

In all cases above, Youtube videos and every other site using Flash
works great... except for the audio. I have no sound whatsoever.

This has been the case for some time, but I've been unable to find
the problem and Google hasn't been much help either. There's lots of
mentions of 64bit systems running into this, but both of my machines
are running in 32bit mode (one is AMD64 desktop, the other is a Intel
 Centrino laptop).

Does anyone have some ideas as to what I'm missing here? I'm kinda
desperate at this point as I'm about to go on a very long tour
through Europe and I won't have time to troubleshoot this sorta thing
 then.

Did you run alsaconf, and redo your mixer settings? What sound card do
you have?

It should be a thing that JustWorks(tm), in my case I had no
configuration to do whatsoever.

well then I think there may be hope for you, for this isn't likely to
provide the best possible solution.

have you tried starting firefox like 'aoss firefox' ?
a hack, but googling aos firefox together provide:

Interestingly enough, running aos firefox results in a command not found
error, and even more interestingly, /dev/dsp doesn't exist for me. I'm not
really sure how mplayer and amarok can work without it, but it does. Any
explanations from you thoughtful folks?

Given that I use alsa, is this likely the problem I'm having with no sound in
Flash?

I just tried that with no success. Do I need to be running it or

Indeed, it the daemon should be running in order to the sound to work (did
in my case), see if there is an option for a more verbose output or
something like that.
