Hello all!
This is merely out of curiousity. I have a sweet
little male gerbil (even if he *is* a little nippy).
He's black and from a New York breeder. Zerwin has a
stripe of white down his chin and throat and little
white splotches/dots on his front paws. :)
I notice others have mentioned a
i have kept mice and gerbils together in the past. a female gerbil of mine

All of my black gerbils have white on their front paws and right under their
chins. The black gerbil I have with the most white markings is a pied that
has a white stripe down the middle of his back fromm his tail almost up to
his big white patch. I am not sure how common the spots on paws are,
You probably don't see those colors in the wild because any non-agouti
colors that showed up would be more easily killed by predators, as they
wouldn't blend in to the surrounding sand. It's the same thing with a
lot of albino animals, they are either more easily noticed by their
predators and
Very common, and one of the reasons black gerbils are so cute! :)

I have found that my black gerbils also get little specks of gray hairs as
they age (especially around their shoulders). It's a very distinguished
look!

A lot of people say that their black gerbils are mean and aggressive but my
male isn't. Do any of you think they are more aggressive?
Well, I wouldn't say mine's aggressive, but she's definitely more
nervous and jittery than my black pied, who is friendly and curious and
always ready to play. My black (Hershey) doesn't like to be held and
once bulldozed my hand out of the way when I had it in the tank. That
might be just her
I have a male and female gerbil and every once in awhile the male will chase
the female and then they both jump into the air really fast and then scurry
away from each other. Then the male and female once again repeat the same
process.
I have asked many people this but still not sure, Is this a
I have had quite a few black gerbils. They have not acted any differently
than any of my other gerbils, I don't think color alone has any effect on
personality.

Who said that? I have had many black gerbils and they
are often the calmist ones. I find that gerbils with
red eyes tend to me more skittish. It seems the the
more pigment they have the better they are. Such as
REW is the worst color i have, they are psycho. And
black is one of the best. The only

Eclipse, may he rest in peace, was quite the gentleman of a black
gerbil. Though he was only 6 weeks old when he died, he was VERY
peaceful, and loved sitting under my chin and playing in my hair. I
hope I can have another one just as sweet one day. *sad smile*

Hello Everybody,
I'm a new Gerbil owner and joined the
list yesterday. I will tell you a bit about myself and the Gerbils.
My name is Nicole (aged 33) and I live in
the Netherlands.
Iown several pets, 2 dogs, 5

Hi everybody,

tried to keep him with his siblings when they were in a "pile" sleeping so that

Exactly. Mutations occur in both the wild and in domesticity. I believe the
main difference is that most (or all) color mutations decrease their chances of
survival in the wild (white coloration for instance), whereas in domesticity
they survive perfectly well, and reproduce.

Color has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I hope my English wasn't too bad ;o)
Hi!
Your English is very good!
Don't worry about health problems in gerbils. The only known problem is
that gerbils with white markings are slightly anaemic, but this is so
slight you can ignore it.

Our household has just increased, but I don't know how much yet ... I
haven't gotten a good look but I know there are at least three. She has
them hidden right now and as this is her first birth, I'm trying to be
sensible and leave them alone. :) Later, though, I'll need to move
enough litter
You know, There might be something to this ruby eyed being more skittish. Mine are not biters. I do notice that they get more excited and do the thumping faster than the only black eyed gerbil I have. I guess I will keep an eye on this behavior as I breed more black eyed gerbils.
