Ardour has a startup dialog with New and Open
Recent tabs. The dialog has its issues, but feels very useful. I never
use a file manager to open a project there. For GIMP, it should be
possible to have New and Recent side by side.

I know the characteristics of JPG, PNG, GIF. I can usually tell
what will work best. There are border cases, though. Then I have
to experiment and can't formulate save_as_jpg or save_as_my_png

The GIMP is also a nice tool for drawing. Here it can always happen
that you want to change the composition. Perhaps the foreground asks
for more space on the left. Easy to do with the crop tool, especialy
now it has guides (center, golden cut ...).

and options to have especialy in media applications,
that working around this is too hard, when everyone can easily have
3 buttons.
Now one could argue space should be for panning like in Photoshop,
not move tool. I prefer middle-click drag for panning, anyway.

The only possibility I see are 4 mini icons in the space of one, most
likely making for a nice pixel salad.
