[Gimp-user] Want to have clone tool fade

2017-04-06 Thread Judy Wilson
I have been using the GIMP for years and I love it, though I don't do
many of the fancy things. I have tried to figure out how to make a
"fade" with the clone tool (and paint tool). I found this site
https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-dynamics.html and I see all kinds of
fancy "dynamics" and maybe what I want has something to do with
"opacity" but I can't figure it out. Can anyone help? I'm getting old.
I'll be 74 next month! :-D I've always gotten great help from this list.
I live in Belize! Judy Wilson

I'm not sure if it will give you what you want, but try making a brush with
a very low "hardness' factor and use it for cloning. I was looking for a way
to feather my cloning, too.

[Gimp-user] Load File Extension as Default Type (eg. RAW UFRAW)

2017-04-06 Thread rogerx
Is there a way within the gimprc or gimp pluginrc file to load a file extension
(eg. cr, cr2, nef, dng, ...) as a default UFRAW file type?

In other words, I have *.nef files and Gimp enjoys choosing to only open the
*.nef file's thumbnail as a TIFF file, ignoring the remainder of the contents of
the *.nef file, which further includes an embedded JPEG and RAW NEF image file
data.

Some searching the Internet led me to the following:
gimprc: (gap-load-ufraw-nef yes)
NOTE: Only for gimp-gap plugin usage

Also I see within the gimp pluginrc file the ufraw file extensions section, also
listing some additional data types that might be prioritizing the file type
during importing.

The specific procedure for specifying the file type is:
file-ufraw-load
Unfortunately, there are really no examples on the Internet (that I can find)
showing users how to take explicit control of this import process with
specifying the file type by file extensions, except via the O/S level.

Re: [Gimp-user] Wacom tablet on Gimp 2.8.20

2017-04-06 Thread Richard
Can you be more specific? Does GIMP detect the tablet upon startup, does it
have separate tools associated with the pen/eraser ends of the stylus, and what
exactly (if anything) does it do when you try to use the tablet with a painting
tool in GIMP?

I have viewed a couple of tutorials on how to get Gimp to recognize my Wacom
tablet. I have other drawing and painting programs that recognize the tablet, so
I don't think it's drivers. I/m running it under Windows 10. (Which I love, BTW)

[Gimp-user] how to obtain the same adjustment in GIMP like this one in Photoshop Express

2017-04-06 Thread Cristian Secară
I played a bit with Adobe Photoshop Express in Windows phone and found
a useful adjustment that increases the gain in deep shadow portions,
while at the same time keeps *untouched* the already bright areas
(above a certain predefined level).

Here is a sample:
(original image)
http://www.secarica.ro/temp/test_808_original.jpg
(shadow increase to 100%)
http://www.secarica.ro/temp/test_808_photoshop_express_shadow_100.jpg
For the above image, the processing time when saving is about 11
seconds (on a 1.2GHz quad core Windows phone).

The application's adjustment looks like this
http://www.secarica.ro/temp/wp_ss_20170407_0003.png

I tried in GIMP various filters, effects, scripts, curves, fake HDR
etc. but with either I played with, there was always a slight change
also in the bright portions of the image.

What adjustment can be used to obtain the exact same result by using
GIMP ?

Here is another sample:
(original image - filename nokia_lumia_1020_10.jpg on this page
http://www.photographyblog.com/previews/nokia_lumia_1020_photos/ )
(shadow increase to 100%)
http://www.secarica.ro/temp/test_1020_photoshop_express_shadow_100.jpg

Thank you,
Cristi

[Gimp-user] GIMP save modfied EXIF

2017-04-06 Thread Scott Jacobs via gimp-user-list
>after finishing what should I click to be save ?

My guess, from looking at your picture, is that probably GIMP holds the EXIF
metadata in memory, and that it
automatically gets saved whenever you save the GIMP .xcf file, and gets
exported along with the image
whenever you export as an image format that can save EXIF metadata, which I
think is just .jpg and .tiff.
"It is not used in JPEG 2000, PNG, or GIF."

[As an aside, possibly relevent:

I had the situation, that when I renamed my photos, or rotated them in an
image-viewing program, or
possibly also overwrote them in GIMP, that the file-modification date/time
became the day that I renamed/
rotated/overwrote them, and that because I needed the file-modification
date/time to remain the moment
that I took the picture (primarily for ease in sorting through the photos in
Nautilus/Nemo - so that I could tell
what pictures were taken after what other photos, and what were all on the same
date, etc.), I needed some
way to change the date/time back to the original photo-taking time.

I google'd the issue, and found that I could use the following command to reset
the date/time to the original:

exiftool "-DateTimeOriginal>FileModifyDate"
if , "then only supported file types in the directory are
processed...Adding the -r option causes subdirectories to
be processed recursively" (from "man exiftool")
exiftool is in the package "libimage-exiftool-perl" and should be in your Linux
repositories.
It is also available for Windows and Mac...

[Gimp-user] 4K screen - icon sizing in Linux

2017-04-06 Thread RoseyXulel
Can anyone guide me in resizing the icons and brushes in GIMP 2.8 for Linux Mint
18? The text automatically adjusts with system settings but the icons remain
miniscule, which makes it almost impossible to choose a brush or tool! I
discovered the themes made for Windows, but none for Linux. Any assistance will
be extraordinarily appreciated by me!

[Gimp-user] Load File Extension as Default Type (eg. RAW UFRAW)

2017-04-06 Thread rogerx
Going off on a slight tangent, I can see where a sub-menu option should be
within the load menu upon selecting and *.nef file (or similar RAW image file
containing multiple images), where the user should be able to check/tick the
images to open (eg. Thumbnail image, JPEG image, RAW image, ...) and make those
chosen options default until modified later again.

I know, you'll be awaiting my patch submittal. ;-)

[Gimp-user] how to obtain the same adjustment in GIMP like this one in Photoshop Express

2017-04-06 Thread Scott Jacobs via gimp-user-list
>...a useful adjustment that increases the gain in deep shadow portions, while

>predefined level)

Experts: is there a way to select just Shadows or just Midtones, or just
Highlights?

Then one could just use the Levels or Curves tool on the selection.

I know that Color Balance can confine the Range To Adjust to one of these three
samed subsets of the image,
but then one would have to change Cyan-->Red, Magenta-->Green, and
Yellow-->Blue separately
(and even if one could "chain" them together, I am not sure that
raising/lowering them together would
achieve the same effect as raising or lowering Levels on the selection...)
[By the way, how are Shadows/Midtowns/Highlights defined? Is there some
standard, or does GIMP have its
own definitiion, which might not equal some other one...?]

I google'd "GIMP select just Shadows", and found one pertinent result (from
David Gowers on 2009-04-07):
http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-user/11373-select-shadows
which says:
"I typically use QuickMask mode.
1. Copy the image
2. Enter QuickMask mode
3. Paste the image and Anchor it
4. Colors->Auto->Normalize
5. Exit QuickMask mode
The above will select pixels based on their intensity -- a pixel of 0intensity
being 0% selected, 127 intensity == 50% selected, 255 ==100% selected.
You could modify this with various tools in the Colors menu to get thedesired
effect.
For instance, your original 'select the shadows' idea could be done by simply1.
Colors->Invert
2. Adjust with Colors->Curves to taste, or threshold usingColors->Threshold if
you wanted a hard-edged selection
The above is the advanced method, with more control andsophistication. However,
simply setting the 'select by' option to'Value' for the 'select by color' tool
might do what you want.
Hope that helps!
David
