Thank you but I've never used GIMP. Is there a tutorial or a walk-through of
sorts showing
What would it take to be able to improve font readability in the UI? The image
url below gives a few examples of what's possible. Please understand, for many
people Gimp would only start to be usable with the large option shown.

Well, the tutorial is;
1. File menu -> Open Image
2. Filters menu -> click on Enhance -> click on Sharpen
3. Move the Sharpness slider in the Sharpen dialogue to a suitable value.

Found that the "Smoke" brush used with varied opacity (usually very
low) and as a smudge tool does pretty decent watercolor effects.
