Yes sphinx was installed when I check it with the show:
yum info sphinx

Ok, I actually fixed this. It turns out to have been quite simple. I ran
out of memory on the server and hadn't allocated any swap. Poller and
ActiveMQ had died, and simply fixing the swap issue solved the problem.
