compilation of the current ghc in cvs with ghc-4.06 and egcs-2.91.66
now goes smoothly for me, until the linking at the end.

still ok until DriFT is reached: see below.
Or should I "make clean make" in the top directory?
Yes, it sounds like "make clean make" is going to be easier than
diagnosing this. Set it off then go
