I second the recommendation about the ProCurve series--I've worked with them a lot lately, and they're extremely easy to configure for just about anything you need. (I've mainly worked with the 2512, 2400, and 1600M, but their interface is pretty much standard for the entire series) -

BTW, at UNH, CS719/819 is taught in Java, not C++ (CS719 is an excellent class nonetheless). For C++, I personally recommend Brian Johnson's CS415 and CS416 classes if you can take them; Brian Johnson is an excellent teacher. Of course, that would be a two semester intro to C++. UNH also has
