from a 10BaseT card on my Mandrake 8.1 box; while the 3Com does USB also,
I can't speak to whether or not it works in USB mode with Linux.

The main tradeoff is run-time performance, but for the most part that is
a good tradeoff unless your system needs all the I/O performance it can
get. In my specific case I have a couple of filesystems I keep unmounted
except when I do nightly backups.

WRT: The other posts, have you been able to allow for non-root logins
over telnet. Then, once logged in, then use su, sudo or sux to become
root.
You may need to add /dev/pts to /etc/securetty.
But, I think you are opening up a can of worms.

We had a program at the BCS to do that. We primarily targeted teachers
because many teachers could not afford a decent computer 10 years ago.
One company provided free labor to rebuild the computers from the junk
some people dropped off.
