start a new chapter in GNHLUG?

It's an extremely complicated and convoluted process filled with tons of
red-tape and forms that need to be filled out in triplicate.  But the
 short of it is:

 1. Have a place to hold meetings.
 2. Have a presenter willing to present something of interest
 3. Schedule a time and date
 4. Announce said meeting (right here on this list, or on gnhlug-announce)
 5. Wait for people to show up.

In lieu of 1 and 2, you can just pick a place that sells food and beer,
skip the topic altogether, and just let us know.  Someone is bound to
 show up :)

Hope that helps, and good luck with those forms in triplicate!

It's good to hear this is not a complex process. :)

In that case, myself and Chip Marshall will be heading up efforts on a
Manchester GNHLUG chapter aka ManchLUG. I'll send out the details
to the announce list as soon as they're finalized.

Several months back, on gnhlug-discuss, I raised the question: Would
we be better off without the regular speaker concept? My concerns
were: (B1) Having a formal speaker every month makes it harder to
organize a meeting (and thus makes it less likely for people to
have/maintain regular meetings). (B2) Some people may find formal
speakers intimidating. If we want to grow a community of plain
ordinary Linux users, we may be better off framing things as a
peer-to-peer gathering-of-like-individuals. (B3) When we are in the
habit of having a regular speaker, then when we *don't* have one,
nobody shows up.

I don't think that discussion reached anything like a satisfactory
conclusion, so I can't say which direction is better, but it's
something to think about.

  IMO. YMMV. HTH. HAND.

I would like to start holding Manchester area LUG meetings.

 Please do!

Officially? The board-of-directors has to approve use of our good
name. You have to name two contacts, which you've done. I'll call a
vote on-line. Hopefully we'll get fast answers.

Beyond that, you're pretty much on your own at this point. Paul's
got some good suggestions.

If there's anything I can do to help, please ask. I expect there's
not much I actually can do, but you can ask. :) If you want
something put on the website and don't want to bother learning how to
use TWiki, feel free to just email it to me and I'll do it.

Feel free to e-mail me direct if such a discussion will cause
 unnecessary list traffic.

This list (gnhlug-org) is practically dead. This may be the first
activity it has seen in 2010. It's sad.

I would even suggest considering doing some organizing on
gnhlug-discuss, just in an attempt to stir up interest. At least
there's more people there. But do as you like. It's your meeting.
:)
