it looks like lsocket was being set correctly. The line which dies is:
configure:9733: checking for main in -lnetsnmp
configure:9757: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -I/usr/include/mysql -
DBIG_JOINS=1 -DHAVE_RWLOCK_T -I. -I/usr/include-L/usr/lib
conftest.c -lnetsnmp -lkvm -lm -lresolv
