I've changed the subject line for this message and I hope the moderator of
this forum will let it stand even though it breaks the thread. I do not wish
to be associated in any way with the sentiments of those previous comments
about the management of this list. No doubt Jean-Claude will also wish to
dissociate himself from the new bedfellow he has unwittingly acquired.

All people respectful of the professional endeavours of Richard Poynder must
surely have shared my disgust at the tone and the content of SJI co-founder
Zinath Rehana's original post (linked to below). To level public accusations
of libel, harassment, intimidation and arrogance at a journalist whom many
of us know from personal experience to pursue his practice with skill,
balance, courtesy, respect and complete professionalism is rotten enough. To
resort to a smear of racism is well beyond the pale.

It would be even if there had been the slightest hint that any racism were
in play in Poynder's investigations. That there wasn't, and that he was
going about his business employing his usual rigorous, professional
standards, makes it all the more disgraceful.

This list is no place for such histrionics and dirty play and I register my
full support for the moderator for making a judgment not to post a message
that was way past the point of decency and respectful argument and which
appears (to my non-legal eye) to have strayed into libellous territory.
Posting such a message would have been a bad decision.

Re: Call for a vote of nonconfidence in the moderator of the AmSci Forum

2008-10-07 Thread Eloy Rodrigues
I think this discussion should not go on indefinitely here on the list!

There are two separate issues, that are being mixed and confused here.

1 - Stevan's position as moderator

2 - Stevan's style as poster

Regarding the first, I think one should ask himself if Stevan has done
something wrong on his role as moderator (and if he has done it recently for
all this fuss now). As he censored, or had any other action limiting the
diffusion, of any legitimate message about OA sent to the list?
Despite some previous claims, afterwards denied, I think the answer is NO.

So, I think Stevan has been doing a great job keeping the list on topic,
I'm thankful for all the work and time he invests on moderating the list,
and I'm really amazed with all this thread of discussion (started by
unfunded claims of censorship).

But as it started, I agree with the call for a vote, but of list

Regarding the second point, I think no one should censor or impose a style
on the postings of other members of the list (provided that they respect
basic rules of social behavior). In my opinion that would really constitute
censorship. But it's only my opinion!

But if there a members thinking that we should have a manual of posting
style for the list, please write it, and propose it to the list and we can
vote it, again of list (I would be really curious, to see the proposed
borders of what would be admissible or not admissible regarding the reply
and comment of other postings- could I cite/comment an expression, a
phrase, a paragraph?).

As long as we don't have a Manual of posting style approved, I don't think
no one (not even many voices) can impose a limitation on the freedom of
expression of any member of the list!

We could try having a different moderator, freeing Stevan to post, and to
respond to others' postings (preferably, as several respondents have
indicated, in a concise self-contained message, rather than interpolated
into the original or a summary thereof) without any ambiguity as to his
standing vis-à-vis other list members.

Then we could see whether list members find it better, worse, or no
different

I for one would nominate Charles Oppenheim, if he's willing to take on the
role

(3) Apart from that, the moderator has no special status or authority

By my count, there have not been many votes one way or the other, but
of the few votes there have been, more seem to be expressing
confidence in my moderatorship than those that are calling for me to

I have also been accused of of censorship, by both Jean-Claude and

important, if we are to spare the Forum the bandwidth of votes

the votes to be sent to a trusted 3rd party for tallying, if that is
the wish of the Forum.

[GOAL] Re: Request for information on repository request-copy Button

2013-10-17 Thread Eloy Rodrigues
Dear Stevan,

I completely support the request to have the Request Copy functionality
embedded in the vanilla DSpace versions. We've been upgrading the Request
Copy Add-on (for the jsp interface, that it's the one we are using) since we
first developed it.

We are currently upgrading the Add-on for DSpace 3.2 (we are upgrading our
repository to DSpace 3.2), and the production version of the Add-on is for
DSpace 1.8xx repositories.

We are obviously willing to contribute the Addon code to be included in the
DSpace core, and strongly support that integration.

Best,

Dear Eloy, Bram Carol,

As Eloy was the first to adopt the Button for DSpace, could you or Bram (or
anyone else) please help with this?

It apparently needs an upgrade, and it's especially important to provide and
embed it in DSpace core at this crucial time in the evolution of OA policy
worldwide.

The Button is an essential component in an effective OA mandate.

I received a message stating that you are interested in the use of Request Copy
button in repositories.

We at the Smithsonian Libraries use DSpace and have employed the Request Copy
button for several years.

However, it is becoming problematic as the plugin does not seem to have any
active development or upgrades.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with DSpace but for several versions, there
has been an XML user interface as well as the original JSP (java server pages)
interface.

The Request Copy plugin only works with *.jsp and that is very limiting.

We would like to upgrade to the current version but will have to give up the
functionality which many of our users like to have.

Please take a minute to tell me something about your interest and your work.

Best,

Alvin Hutchinson

[GOAL] FOSTER - Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research - renewed web presence

2014-09-03 Thread Eloy Rodrigues
Apologies for cross posting

FOSTER proudly announces that, as of today, the Open Access and Open Science
communities will benefit two-fold from our freshly designed new web
presencehttp://www.fosteropenscience.eu/. First off: the renewed FOSTER
project website now features various enhancements, most notably a comprehensive
news section with an account of the many contributions the project partners
made throughout the last months to several events and conferences. One of the
main events was a series of workshops delivered by FOSTER speakers to EU
project officers in Brussels on Open Access Requirements to publications and
research data in Horizon. See the video recording and
slideshttp://www.fosteropenscience.eu/project/index.php?option=com_contentview=articleid=35:presentationscatid=9:downloadItemid=107
 of all the presentations.

The second addition to our web presence is a preview of the FOSTER training
portalhttp://wwwt.fosteropenscience.eu which has started to collect all
information around FOSTER funded and (co-) organized training events. See our
full training programme throughout the second half of 2014 with links to the
training organizations and information on how to register for your favorite
course. Looking for a specific training topic? Eight main areas cover courses
on Open Access, Open Data and Open Science as well as on Research Data
Management, Funder compliance and related fields including specific subjects
like metrics and copyright issues. The portal will be enriched over the next
weeks with content that each of these courses delivers. Look forward to
discovering a wealth of material provided for the European research community!

About FOSTER - www.fosteropenscience.euhttp://www.fosteropenscience.eu
FOSTER (Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research) is a 2-year,
EU-Funded (FP7) project, carried out by 13 partners across 8 countries. The
primary aim is to produce a European-wide training programme that will help
researchers, postgraduate students, librarians and other stakeholders to
incorporate Open Access approaches into their existing research methodologies.
