11th seed and National Junior Girls Champion Bhakti Kulkarni (ELO 2166) of Goa was in the joint lead with Woman Grandmaster Eesha Karavade of Maharashtra after the fourth round of the National Women's 'B' Chess Championship being played in Calicut. They both have four points each and Bhakti next plays her coleader in the 5th round.

Woman FIDE Master Bhakti defeated N. Raghavi (ELO 2057) of Tamil Nadu in an extremely hard fought game. At one stage it seemed that Raghavi had a crushing Kingside attack. However, Bhakti hung on for dear life and defended accurately to restore parity. Raghavi finally overstretched in the position to go down in the endgame after 55 moves.

Her coach Dronacharya Awardee Raghunandan Gokhale was clearly delighted with the fighting qualities showed by Bhakti in this particular encounter, She will need all these and more if she has to get past the highly reputed Woman Grandmaster from Pune in the next crucial battle.

One of the other major aspirants for the event WIM Padmini Rout (ELO 2238) of Orissa was upset by unfancied Devangi Patankar (ELO 2035) of Maharashtra in a marathon 81 move encounter featuring the Sicilian Najdorf opening.

Goa's other entry - Nandhini Saripalli (ELO 1844) - has two and a half points after beating unrated Apoorva Sawant of Maharashtra. She next plays K. Shruthi (ELO 1992) of Karnataka in the 5th round.
