Plea to set up language centre for Konkani

Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik has demanded a regional centre of the Central
Institute of Indian Languages in Goa in order to give Konkani language which
suffered during the Portuguese regime.

Naik, making a special mention in the Rajya Sabha on March 18, said that the
Central Institute of Indian Languages at Mysore was established to co-ordinate
the development of Indian languages and to bring about the essential unity of
Indian languages through scientific studies, consequently,
to contribute towards emotional integration of people of India.

He further said that the Konkani language, which was suppressed during
Portuguese rule, could surface only after Goa's Liberation in 1961.
