It is getting more and more difficult for me to understand why the Government has meddled into this issue. To a certain extent, one can understand the logic if the panel which is elected happen to be a bunch of known rogues, and sometimes, in such exceptional cases, an action like this can perhaps be rationalized. But in this case, what was the need for the Government to interfere? On the other side too, there are members with close affiliations to the ruling party. One of the panellists from Dr Anil Gaunekar group in fact contested Ponda elections on the BJP ticket some years back and has been a Sarpanch of Khandepar before. He is a long standing and prominent member of the ruling party and was a front runner for the Ponda ticket but withdrew at the instance of the top leadership during the current Assembly elections. So is the Govind Kamat Panel trying to make this into a Panaji BJP vs Ponda BJP issue? Do they consider themselves superior to those from the other side simply because they happen to be from the CM’s own constituency?
