Hi Louise,

I studied in the Emirates. In those days, the
curriculum was left upto the board the school was
affiliated to. Hence, the Indian High School came
under the purview of the Delhi board, and the school
next door to the University of London. They were both
very secular in their curriculum.

Somewhere in the nineties, the Arabs decided that
Arabic had to be thought compulsorily as one of the
subjects. This was very difficult on the expat kids
but they muddled though it. Now, I guess the Arabs are
exerting an even greater influence on the curriculum
and sadly insisting on teaching Islam in school,
without a choice.

I couldn't tell from your post whether you mind Islam
being taught or not. If you do, tell your child to
learn it from a historical perspective and also
introduce her to other great literature based on
religion as well as Greek mythology (which children
love anyway). This way she is exposed to a rounded
education. Don't worry she will come through it
unscathed.

take care,
selma
