GOACAN condemns murdous assault on social activists and calls for people to get organised. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network (GOACAN) strongly condemns the dastardly attack on social activists Aires Rodrigues and Prajal Sakardande in Panjim on Monday and calls upon the Govt. of Goa to seek out the culprits and bring them to justice. GOACAN also views with concern the police inaction that permitted the assault on Saturday of activist Sebastian Rodrigues and others at an illegal mining site in Quepem by vested interests from the industry. The current breakdown of the law & order situation can be clearly linked to the rise in activities such as fraudulent land deals, construction of mega housing projects through violations and continued attacks on the ecology by illegal hill cutting and burying of the water bodies. At a time when the elected representatives, executive officers of the administration and police personnel are increasingly colluding with the vested interests in various Talukas, the people of Goa have to seize the moment and organise against such situations. The Goa Govt. is encouraging modern mass tourism that brings with it casino gambling and sex tourism on the one hand and giving a free hand to the real estate developer, builder and mining lobby to continue its assault on Goa's environment. This will only result in a fierce fight which will result in continued attacks on social activists. GOACAN calls upon the people of Goa to ready themselves in the next three months during the finalisation of Regional Plan 2021 to defend their democratic right to actively participate in the Gram Sabhas and voice their dissent to mega projects and a non sustainable model of development imposed on Goa. ------------------------------------------------------------ GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK ----------------------------------------------------------- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa ----------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ----------------------------------------------------------
