Nostalgia Pic #29 _______________ 1927 - 2007: Azad Maidan, Panjim - 80 years apart - one of Goa's most famous monuments in this grassy little square or "maidan" in the centre of Panjim, is literally 'going to seed'! Of pristine beauty in the Greek style just a few decades ago, its popularity as a dubious public rallying point, has led to its lawn and central dome being sullied by nocturnal trespassers. More's the pity.
The dome originally housed a statue of Alfonso de Albuquerque, then replaced by the remains of Dr. Tristao Da Braganca Cunha, a noted Goan freedom-fighter. Alongside is a memorial to native freedom- fighters. The Maidan itself is bordered by some interesting buildings! http://2008goanconvention.com/nostalgia.php Pictures: Kind courtesy by request: Willy Goes; JoeGoaUK on flickr; FR _________________________________________________________________
