My brother tells me that the ground water level in Bicholim is falling at an alarming rate. This is besides the general shortages of potable water. It is disgusting and disgraceful state of affairs in a small place that gets 120 inches of rain every year. It is important that each and every one of us do our bit to prevent such a situation in Aldona and from our experience be a beacon to other villages in Goa . This can be done through Rain Water Harvesting ( RWH) The two basic principles of RWH are 1. The aim of RWH is to increase the "water table" 2. It is essential to harvest the rain water where it falls as after that it gains speed and has to be stopped using costly civil structures. (Also this running water causes soil erosion, taking away our valuable top soil and dumping into our rivers and water bodies causing their siltation.) Here is in brief what we can do in our own small way to increase the water table. Simple techniques with good results: A. Roof Water Harvesting: Most of our houses have tiled roofs and our own wells. We could channel the water from the roof into our wells using plastic or metallic channels/poneos. This will require an investment of Rs.2500-3000 for the poneos and the angles to hold them. Please remember to connect the last poneo leading to the well after it has rained heavily for a week or so. This is so that all the bird droppings, leaves etc have been washed away. I know you must be thinking "don't be silly" as the raised water level in the well will soon go down. But therein lies the beauty . This recharges the water table. B: Infiltration Pits: For those who do not have wells or where all the roof water cannot be channeled into the well. Please get small infiltration pits (1 metre or so deep and a 2 feet wide) dug where the roof water falls. If you can afford it dig such pits in your yard. C. Mulching: This practise was quite common in Goa before maybe not with the intention of RWH but for enriching the soil near the plant roots. The soil is excavated 6 inches deep around 1-1/2 to 2 metres from the plant roots and fallen leaves spread out in the circular area created. The leaves and other vegetable matter rot forming humus which has a high water retaining capacity. Rain water falling on the tree/plant drips down and then percolates in the soil instead of running away. D. I have left the best way of RWH for the last because it is a long term solution. GROW MORE TREES and safeguard the existing ones. Happy Rain Water harvesting. Now is the time to start.
