IN TODAY'S EZINE:  Cyclonic winds disrupt life in Goa. Several trees
uprooted. Houses and cars damaged. Power lines snap, supply disrupted. Ten
trawlers capsize at Kharewaddo Jetty in Vasco, located near berth number 11
of the Mormugao Port Trust. Another 25 trawners damaged. Total loss
estimated at Rs 100 million.

        ONLY THIS MORNING (Thursday), the impact of last night's
        storm is becoming clear from news reports reaching here.
        Below are some updates from the local newspapers:

        o Sudden cyclonic winds accompanied by rain and thunder
          lashed several parts of Goa Wednesday evening, causing havoc.(NT)
        o Velocity of the cyclonic winds which hit around 7.45 pm was
          put at over 70 kmph. (NT)
        o Over a 100 trees were uprooted across Goa, causing power
          failure in various parts of the state. (H) Lights are still
          off in some areas of Goa, this report goes out via UPS/inverted.
        o No reports of casualties in the morning's newspapers.
        o Fire Services received over 150 calls relating to uprooting
          of trees, nearly half of all calls from Panjim and
          surroundings.(H)
        o Trees came down on Dayanand Bandodkar Marg, Miramar, Campal,
          the Pajim area (in front of Cafe Bhonsle, near Hotel Vihar,
          Taleigao, Merces, Chimbel, etc). 
        o Fifteen sites were cleared by the time the newspapers went
          to press. (H)
        o Unseasonal (pre-monsoon) showers also exposed the weak
          drainage system in Panjim. Water logging was experienced
          near the Panjim market, Miramar Circle, Police HQ.
        o Winds lasted for nearly an hour. 
        o Panjim's Met observatory called this a routine atmospheric
          phenomena caused due to the rise in temperature. They said
          such squally winds often takes place during a hot summer.
        o This is the second tiime such a phenomena has happened in
          less than a week in Goa. (NT)
        o An air-conditioned structure for the 'Interior Exterior'
          exhibition put up at the Kala Academy complex at Panjim
          suffered bad damage, organisers estimated the loss at
          between Rs 1.5 to 2 million. (NT)
        o River cruises stopped while several trawlers had to return.(NT)
        o Several parts of Goa were plunged into darkness. (NT)
        o Several power lines snapped and conductors damaged due to
          rain and winds. Besides, a 110 KV Tivim feeder was also
          damaged. (NT)
        o In Panjim market, metal sheets were blown off and traders
          had difficulties in protecting their shops. (NT)
        o In three different incidents, parked cars were damaged
          in Panjim as huge trees came crashing down -- near the
          Old Secretariat, near Cine National, and near Pehli Manzil
          at Campal. (NT)
        o Branches of trees had falled at several places on the busy
          D B Bandodkar Marg. Another huge tree was uprooted
          near the D B Bandodkar Marg. (NT)
        o Trees were also uprooted near Cabo Raj Niwas, Miramar,
          Shankarwadi in Taleigao, Mala, Fontainhas, Bhatulem
          and St Inez areas.
        o At Aldona, a banyan tree and an old house caught fire,
          when lightening struck them. Fortunately nobody was
          staying in the house. (NT)
        o Buses were rescheduled, leaving late-evening passengers
          stranded in a state where evening transport is a problem
          even in the best of times. Locals and tourists were
          drenched by the unexpected rains too.
