IN TODAY'S EZINE: A Goan makes it big to the world of Indian hockey.... Rane
sworn-in as CM.... Citizens take action against pollution at Moira..... Food
tips from nearby Maharashtra.... Documentary on Baina, showing today in
Goa.... And more. Read on.

MUMBAI-BASED GOAN ADRIAN D'SOUZA who has been showing
great promise under the bar, is the new golden boy of
Indian hockey. The 20-year-old goalie raises the bar for
Indian hockey, and has also been appointed the Indian
captain for the Junior Hockey World Cup. Said his
school coach Joseph Monteiro: "He is one of the most
talented boys I have trained and would definitely make
it big." He was a prolific scorer for his St Anne's
Bombay school, writes ZENA COSTA, Margao in Gomantak Times.

IT'S LEFT TO CITIZENS TO TAKE ACTION? It may have been the
World Environment Day, but it meant little for a driver of
a forest department truck, who was arrested on charges of
dumping a truck-load of garbage on the national highway
on the Mapusa-Bastora-Moira junction. Karl Pinto De Souza,
driving home on Sunday afternoon, noticed the dumping of
tiles, mud and stones and rubble in progress. Other members
of the Moira Civic and Consumer Forum and comunidade also
gathered at the site and stopped the dumping. It is learnt
the range officer tried to work out a compromise by offering
to clean up a whole stretch of garbage at Moira, if the
complaint was withdrawn. But the residents of Moira were
determined to punish the guilty, as they felt this would
set an example to others to protect the environment and
        save the landscape. (Herald)

FEEDBACK TO DAMODAR MAUZO'S STORY 'THE VOW', translated by Xavier Cota: What
a beautiful, heart-tugging story The Vow is. So much depth and lucidity in
expressing the old man's anguish and longing for his son, ad also the
reaching out and response of the Padre to those emotions of Camil. In fact,
you yourself feel like reaching out and hugging Camil to comfort him. One
read through the story, half-expecting that the Padre would in fact turn out
to be Jose. But the ending of the story is unexpected and novel, leaving one
happy that Camil's faith was not betrayed. Lovely. -- Audrey R Daver, New

CULINARY CORNER * Served special for Goanet, from Daisy Rodrigues, Calif.

Eggplant-potato curry from Maharashtra

Lets visit the Maharashtrian cuisine today. The landscape, the people and
the crops grown in various regions largely influence Maharashtrian cuisine.
It is not only memorable for its subtle variety and strong flavors, but also
because of the legendary hospitality of Maharashtrian. In affluent homes,
feasts often start at mid-day and end when the sun turns towards the western
horizon. Here is a Maharashtrian recipe for Eggplant-potato curry also
known as vangi-batata bhaaji)

1 big eggplant (aubergine)
2 potatoes
4 green chilies
1-teaspoon turmeric powder
Pinch of asafetida
1 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds or cumin seeds
1/2 tsp of tamarind pulp
1/2 tsp of black Maharashtrian masala (optional)
2 tsp coriander powder
Salt to taste
Sugar/jaggery to taste
1 tblsp oil
Cilantro/coriander leaves to garnish

Chop eggplant into 1-inch pieces. Soak in salt water to keep them from
turning dark. Make 1-inch pieces of potatoes. Chop chilies and cilantro.
Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds or cumin seeds. As the seeds crackle,
add asafetida and turmeric powder. Add chopped chilies and fry. Add
potatoes and stir. Cover and cook them until partially cooked. Drain water
from the soaked eggplant pieces. Add them and fry for 5 minutes. Add 1/2-cup
water, tamarind pulp, black masala, coriander-cumin powder, salt, sugar or
jaggery and cover until the pieces turn soft and the curry thickens.
Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot. Variation: Add green peas. Also,
crushed ginger and garlic enhances the flavor. To thicken the curry, you may
add 2 tsp peanut powder.
