and grabbed the team sailing title in the Optimist Coastal
National Championship at Hawaii Beach, Dona Paula. (H)
BIG WINS FOR PILAR, TROPA: Fr Agnel Pilar scored a
thumping 13-0 win over a hapless St Estevam SC in a
group encounter at the Air India under 16 football.
Tropa SC proved too good for rivals Cunchelim Union,
winning 5-0 at Duler. The earlier match was at Don Bosco

o Daondo Boys, Benaulim drubbed St Anthony's Colva 3-0 at Sanquelim.(H)
o Directorate of Sports under-17 campites defeated the Press by 9

the tie-breaker over AA de Moira to enter the finals of the the

It the weekend, so I can think of nothing better then a warm casual main
dish that will please your palate and your stomach. For this I would like
to stay in my own Goa and present you with this very delicious warm chicken
dish.
Chicken Cafrael -- a warm Goan barbeque dish
8 Chicken thighs
Oil
2 medium onions -- finely chopped
2 inch piece ginger, shredded
1 large green chili, finely chopped
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
1 cup coconut milk
Masala Ingredients
5-6 large green chilies
5-6 black peppercorns
2 inch piece fresh ginger root
8-10 garlic cloves
4-5 deep red dried chilies
4 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander
2 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 teaspoon coriander seeds
salt
Make the masala. Grind all the ingredients except the salt to a thick paste
in a blender, adding a little water. Add salt to taste. Pierce the chicken
thighs with a fork and rub the masala liberally in to them. Cover and leave
for at least 3 hours, preferably overnight, in the fridge. Heat the oil in
a heavy based frying pan set over a medium heat. Place the chicken in it
skin side down and allow to brown slowly, shaking the pan gently so it
doesn't stick. When golden, turn over and continue cooking until the chicken
is done. Transfer to a dish and keep warm in a low oven. Return the pan to
the heat and add the onions, ginger, green chili, turmeric, cumin and
coriander. Saute until the onions are browned, then stir in the coconut milk
and simmer for 10-12 minutes until the sauce has a pouring consistency.
Pour on the chicken or serve separately.

GOA SUDHAROP PLANS: Goa Sudharop is celebrating its 5-year anniversary at a
gala function on July 3, 2005 (Sunday) in Oakland, California, at the very
modern Samuel Merritt College Hall and auditorium. Goa Sudharop has assisted
or made awards over the last five years, thanks to generous contributions
from donors, sponsors, and supporters. All monies donated and collected go
to projects and recipients. Goa Sudharop has no paid staff nor does it pay
its volunteers.
EXPATS SUPPORT A BOOK, DOWN UNDER: Alvito (Alvaro) Peres da Costa informs
that prominent Goan writer Dr Jose Pereira et al's book 'Folksong of Goa,
Mando-Dulpod and Dekhnni' has recently been published and is available
through Aryan Books International of Delhi.
This publication was sponsored by the Goan Overseas Association in Sydney,
New South Wales -- not as a for-profit venture, but as "one of the few
scholarly ventures on the long road to crystallisation of a befitting record
of our heritage". Peres da Costa is keen to inspire other Goan ethnic and
cultural associations around the world to back similar work like Dr Jose's.
RESEARCH PROJECTS FROM QUEPEM: Renji George of the Quepem Government
College's Dept. of Economics, and a Goaphile of long standing, who
has done quite some work to understand the region, says that at
present three research projects are going on under him. These are
on: Sustainability of Goa's Development Experience; An Audit of
Consumer Redressal Mechanism in Goa; and a library fellowship on
women, tourism and culture in Goa.
FROM MANGALORE, A DEMAND TO RECOGNISE DIVERSITY IN KONKANI: From Mangalore,
a demand has come up to include Kannada and the Roman script while giving
out Konkani awards. Dr Edward Nazareth, secretary of the Karnataka Konkani
Writers Forum, which has over a hundred Konkani writers using the Kannada
script, made a call for looking at the Roman script too.
He said: "We will continue Kannada script in Karnataka as before. But in
this era of globalization we need to go along with the happenings of this
world. As a large number of our people have migrated from their native place
and they keep migrating, use of internet and mobile SMS have become the part
and parcel of our life and also our people opt to take up education in
English medium education in vast numbers we feel the need of learning an
additional Roman script in order to keep continue to communicate with our
people in Konkani. That is the reason we find the need of learning Roman
