IN TODAY'S EZINE: What lead to the ouster of the BJP? What helped to make
Rane chief minister yet again? Some suggestions of answers from the media.

RESENTMENT AGAINST the 'autocratic' BJP regime,
anger of the Bahujan Samaj (non-upper caste
        Hindus) against ex-chief minister Manohar
Parrikar's policies, the politics of vengeance
        and double-speak, a strong Hindutva-line, personal
vilification campaigns and unity among Congressmen
(though temporary) seems to be the major factors
that led to the debacle of the BJP in the
        June 2 bye-elections. (Herald)

GONE WITH THE WIND: Congress blows off BJP, drubs
Parrikar's arrogance 4-1 (headline in GT)

DISASTER AT HIGH NOON FOR BJP: By noon on June 5, it
was all over. Four defeats and one victory by proxy.
The story of BJP's shattered dreams is best told in
figures. Not to be missed is that BJP finished
third in Cumbharjua and a lowly fourth in Benaulim.(GT)

DIGAMBAR KAMAT, BUT SECULAR MARGAO LOSES: Congress
candidate Digambar Kamat powered a win, but only
just. It looked simple for him initially, but a dangerous
polarisation not only narrowed his victory margin, but
brought him to the precipice of defeat. But if it
was not for some mature citizens, a communally-loaded
campaign may have hit its target. Says Lok Shakti convenor
Datta Naik, "The attempt to polarise the voting is a
dangerous move and should be stopped at all costs."
When the electronic voting machines were put on the table
for counting, the Congress appeared shocked when they
realised that the BJP attempt to polarise the Hindu
votes had almost paid off. (GT)

o Two deputy CMs in new Congress government too. (H)
o BJP says it will work as an effective Opposition. (H)
o Congress committed to secular government, says Margaret Alva. (H)
o I will ask for everything, says Dr Wilfred de Souza. (H)
o BJP fails to hold on to Margao. (H)
o BJP office bearer, cop assaulted at Loliem. (H)
o People have rejected Parrikar, says Lok Shakti, calling
the election results a slap on the face of the former CM. (H)

BJP FRAUD ON LAND OWNERS: Authilia Carvalho from
Margao writes that the ousted BJP government proposed
"with lightening speed" to acquire land for
        construction of a ring-road and missing-link along
with land for rehabilitation of hutments for
slum-dwellers at Margao. Carvalho says: "A notification ...
has been invoked in violation of the law and issued
in March last, i.e. after the BJP government fell.
The above notification is issued under a colourable
exercise of power with malafides under the strong
pressure of two BJP MLAs, one of whom Vijay Pai
Khot is a builder and has constructed a big project near
the proposed ring road, and the other is an ex-Margao
MLA who has a personal interest as the slum dwellers
        are his vote-bank." (Herald)

DOCTOR'S ORDERS: WILLY'S PRESSURE TACTICS CLEARS
DECKS FOR geriatric Rane as CM. Threat of Willy, Mickky,
Dhavlikar crossing floors may virtually force
Congress to maintain status quo on Rane. Gomtantak
Times quotes "insiders in the Congress" to say that
the Congress was pressured by "a dangerous possibility of
Dr Wilfred de Souza accepting the BJP's last ditch
desperate attempt to prop him up as Chief Minister".
This lead to upsetting of all equations within
the Congress. It also led to a day of hectic parleys
when both the Luizinho Faleiro and Rane camps drew
battle lines (along with GPCC chief Ravi Naik, who
fancied himself as a consensus dark-horse candidate),
reports the Gomantak Times, reporting on the situation
        on June 5 (Sunday).

CULINARY CORNER * Served special for Goanet, from Daisy Rodrigues, Calif.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's head back to Goa today. Here is a recipe that has been requested many
times over. It can be served as an appetizer or as a main course depending
on the size of the rolls. Pan Rolls

1-cup flour
2 large eggs
Milk (enough for a thin batter)
Ground beef mince
Breadcrumbs
Salt to taste

Sieve the flour. Mix the flour with 1 egg and enough milk to make a thin
pancake like batter. Beat until smooth. Let it rest for about 15 minutes.
Heat a frying pan; coat the pan with a few drops of oil. Pour in a spoonful
of batter, spread evenly and cook for about 2 minutes or so. Take the pan
off the fire remove the crepe. Let it cool. Put some mince in the center,
tuck in sides and roll. Dip the roll in egg wash (made from the second
egg), dip in breadcrumbs and fry until light brown. It's that easy folks!
Try it -- I promise you will like it.
