Quotes from Goanet... way back in time
------------------------------------------------------------------------
REMEMBER when a modem costs Rs 10,000? And when we all dialled out at night,
to lower the long-distance phone call charges one had to pay to get onto the
Internet in Goa (by dialling up Mumbai, then still Bombay)? It seems like
just yesterday when Illona asked whether the Konkani proverbs which were
sprouting out of London were just a figment of imagination, much like the
Phantom's jungle sayings. Needless to say, this compiliation would have been
impossible if Eddie Fernandes in London hadn't sent in some records he had
kept on paper printouts, now OCR'ed back into the PC, just in time for
Goanet's 10th anniversary celebrations on August 10, 2004. FN

I thought we would start a series of talks about our culture. First I have
to ask you guys and gals out there, is our culture dying out? Well lets hear
what you have to say =) -- Herman Carneiro, 11:53 AM 2/3/95, * Goan Culture
Dying?* From <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

OH WELL LETS TALK THIS OVER AND WE CAN WORK SOMETHING OUT. BY THE
WAY HERM U WERE SUPPOSED TO HELLP ME WITH THE GAL SCENE. ;- )

Here's my thoughts on tourism in Goa: Cannon Beach, OR: plans for low income
housing are blocked by business owners who rake in the bucks at this premier
tourist Mecca on the Oregon Coast. The people who work at the businesses in
town--the pizza parlors, the clothing boutiques, other restaurants and
service related businesses--don't live in Cannon Beach. They're bussed in
from Portland's west side suburbs, 50 miles away.

Is this the future for Goa? People being forced from their land by
developers and their plans to build luxury hotels? Hippies who flocked to
Goa mainly for a bottomless supply of cheap beer are beginning to give way
to jet-hopping yuppies.

It's only a matter of time before pressures far more serious than public
nudity begin to show an effect on the local people--by forcing them out of
their own state! -- Jennifer Snarski <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sun, 19 Mar 1995

Hey man, the best thing that has happened is the GOA NET. we dont
people to run away, when the going goes rough. be a winner! winners
never quit, and quiters never win ! Herman, keep up the good work, we
will come back to you with some suggestions. -- Rene Barreto,

UK Goan Festival: The 6th Goan Exhibition & Festival (SCOGO), is being held
this year on Sunday, 9th July 1995 at the GOA Clubhouse, 216 Ravensboume
Avenue, Beckenham, Kent from 11.30 a.m. to about 6 p.m. The Chief Guest wilI
be The Hon. Keith Vaz M.P. Last year -- about 1 ,500 attended.

Goa on the Internet will be featured at one of the stalls (actually a
tent!). We were hoping to attract one of the Internet access providers to
promote their services and thereby have a live link with the Internet but
that has not proved possible, alas. Since we are unable to get a telephone
connection, we will not have a live connection ourselves. We will, however,
have a static display of some of the Internet resources by way of Clipboard
files on a stand alone PC.

Your participation would be most welcome:
I. Suggest the Internet resources that could be displayed.
2. Suggest ways of publicising the Goa-related resources.
3. Attend the Festival if you can and visit our tent!
4. If you are able to attend the festival, please let one of
know if you are prepared to assist at the tent, answering
questions, for a few minutes at least.

Besides the stand alone PC we hope to have:
I. Posters advertising the GoaWeb and Goa-Net
   12. Leaflets summarising the Goa-related resources.
3. A video recording explaining the Internet.
3. Print-outs of some of the Web pages and Net contributions.

Dear Netters: Goa-Net has been in existence for about a year now. It
has been an excellent vehicle for communicating amongst ourselves,
sharing/exploring different viewpoints and for obtaining information
about Goa and Goa related events around the world. We have also had
a lot of fun doing so. The time has come when we have to consider
enhancing Goa-Net. This can be brought about by at least two ways.

        1) By getting our present membership more active on the Net -we want
to hear your views! The more you put in, the more you will get out.
        2) By increasing our current membership. If you are a member of a
Goan club or organization which does not know about the Goa-Net,
please inform the members about it. You could do this by posting
news of the net on a club bulletin board. If you know of a triend or
acquaintance who would be interested in joining us in this
adventure, please give them the information about what Goa and the
Internet is all about. It can and will be a very exciting place to
visit on the Internet. SO PLEASE ASK A FRIEND TO JOIN!

Eddie, Where do you get all these Konkani proverbs from? I was wondering
whether you're making them up?!
"Truth is always twelve years old." Konkani Proverb.
"Wisdom or reason has to bend low before authority." Konkani
proverb.

Dear Shri Rane, I hope that you would find this e-mail of mine in
the best of your health and cheer. Its nice to know that finally
your e-mail has started tickling/clicking. Hope that with this
Goan's abroad comes closer to you and would able to reach their
loving Chief Minister with ease. For you e-mail opens the access to
more than 40 million people spread over the globe. I understood that
you also have the Internet Access (Thanks to NIC!). If that works
fine your reach to the globe will be at your fingre tips. However, I
understood from Ms. Carmen Martins that your link is functioning
properly. I have some points to be made in this regard. Before I
start noting them to you let me make it clear that, these comments
are being made in my personal capacity and does not reflect the
views of the organisation to which I belong.... --

TRAVEL FRIENDS GOA is being developed as an 'alternative' tourism
organisation for Goa which will seek to bring back into tourism the
'host-guest' relationship which has been lost in mass or package tourism. It
subscribes to all acceptable principles of appropriate sustainable, cultural
and rural tourism.... For further details, write to: Travel Friends Goa 48

You would need to have good/latest modem. A good one cost around
Rs.10,000. You could overcome sm charges for dialing to Bombay by
dialing during night hours. But then point that I wish to refer and
emphasise is that ERNET is the best bet in present scenario. --
