  Verenkar's son-in-law. (H)
o Goa government was told by the local high court bench to ensure
that hardened criminals are kept separate from under-trials. (H)
o Goa's Common Entrance Test 2005, a new exam for entry into professional

o Photo in the Weekender/GT, reproduced from the Sunaparant, shows
shows a city bus conductor rubbing hands with a constable, who
the paper says was openly indulging in palm-greasing.

Gomantak Times/Weekender criticises NGOs in Goa for not being active
enough, and faults many by pointing to untackled issues. This comes
not long after the earlier BJP government and its ideological allies
went on the rampage against NGOs, for quite another set of reasons
        -- almost diametrically opposite.

Gomantak Times editor Sujay Gupta paints a bleak picture of tourism
in the North Goa belt, and its ugly side, in an essay titled 'If
you've lost your soul in North Goa, recover it in the south'.

QUOTE: Read Fernandes. He has lessons to give even on how to be a
foreign Goan, a good Portuguese Goan or a plain domestic Goan. And
Goans come in many forms. -- MV Kamath, reviewing journalist
Valentino Fernandes' book 'How To Be An Instant Goan' Diamond, 155
        pp, Rs 150.

QUOTE: Konkani tiatr has survived against all odds and flourished.
-- Annie Quadros, known as the pearl of Konkani tiatr, who worked
for 25 years as an actress.

QUOTE: Goa chief secretary Kiran Dhingra on the "socially
relevant maladies of Goa": No social malady can be corrected within
a short time-frame. They require clear vision, concerted
effort and a sustained follow-through. * The underbelly of
tourism. * The downside of industrial development * The
flipside of traditional attitudes to woman * The breakdown
of community systems of land management * Urbanisation
at an unplanned and unstructured rate. -- In Groove, Tarun Bharat.

UNUSUAL AD: Fresh water fish -- the water from Ralloi Tollem

        incharge (sic).

o Heritage day will be held on April 18 at the Augustunian Complex,
  at Old Goa. (H)
o Five qualities which mark a leader in hospitality -- humility, good
etiquette, impeccable service, providing excellent conveniences and
creating lasting impressions. -- Capt C P Krishnan Nair, chairman
of the Leela Palaces and Resorts, as told to Ethel Da Costa, Groove
  (Tarun Bharat)
o Rahul Alvares profiles 'Doctor' Joe, who worked in a garage and
repaired British bikes (Nortons, Triumphs and BSAs), and has built his
own garage at Porbavaddo in Calangute. He's considered "the most
famous Bullet mechanic in Goa". (Groove, Tarun Bharat)

BUILDING AN ARCHIVE OF SHARABLE IMAGES RELATED TO GOA: Would there be an
interest in building up a public archive of old Goan photographs? Pictures
tell a story well, and we need to collate and put out in cyberspace
photographs that tell the story of Goa. If this suggestion makes sense to
you, contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] We could work out ways to build an
archive, which then becomes a community asset, and is available to anyone
who'd like to access, republish or otherwise share it.
