It was Valentine's Day some years ago and my Siolim neighbor, Mrs.
Maria Costa Fernand D'Souza, 90 years, had one wish left to fulfill
in this world. She wanted to see me married before she joined her
late husband in an eternal Valentine celebration in the sky. Feb 14,
1995, and she introduced me to three, not necessarily eligible,
young women. The first was Ayesha Priya Fernandes, a non-twice born of Sudra
heritage. She is a German national of Goan ancestry holidaying in
Anjuna for the last 10 years (the rave parties have warped her sense
of time and she thinks it is only 10 weeks). We went to lunch and I
ended up paying double for her meal because of her nationality. This
courtship could get expensive I thought and ended it there. A young
bachelor has to save his money for other important things -- like
donating money for Dalit seminarians as Gilbert suggests. Next I had tea with Anjali Sophia Bhemre. Her mother was a BJP
speaker in the Assembly for six weeks prior to joining the Congress
party for three months and eventually settling down as an
independent, although she always voted with Mathany. With all the
party changes, the family seemed too confused for my liking. Another
Goan courtship cut short, a victim of political musical chairs. At
least now I could clearly identify with the hapless average Goan
citizen. Cecilia Caroline Keni was the most stylish of the three. We had
dinner in Baga and as the evening wore on I gathered the courage to
ask her where she was from. I specifically did not ask which village
as the good Fred Noronha says that is a caste-related question. From
the Ribandar parish, she answered. Another short-lived courtship.
But I did finish the dessert before running in the opposite
direction. It is February 14, 2005 and I am likely to be single this
Valentine's day. My neighbor, the late Mrs. D'Souza is probably
still rooting for me in the sky, identifying another group of
prospective brides. Oh well, I'll just stay home and wait for the
doorbell to ring. On second thoughts, I am going to go out and wave
Valentine ballons, cards, sweets, T-shirts, in front on some RSS
folks. If I'm not going to be happy on Valentine's Day, neither are
they. Look for me in the Candolim area, dressed in red with a big
