The upper castes grabbed the prime posts. The police has been saffronised. The government vacencies went to the majority community in a major way. The government ruled by extensions to government servants. -- Statement from the UGDP, published in Gomantak Times.

GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK (PHONE 2252660 and email [EMAIL PROTECTED]) has announced a Gram Sabha (Villagers' Council) Demands Week from Feb 13 to 19. This aims at highlighting problems and aspirations of (gramsabha) villagers in Goa. See http://www.goacan.org
SEZHIYAN: DISMISSAL OF DEMOCRACY IN GOA (Source: The Hindu) The vexatious decisions taken by such constitutional authorities as the Speaker and the Governor during and after the deliberations of the Goa Assembly on a confidence motion involving the Manohar Parrikar Government have resulted in a further loss of confidence of the people in the parliamentary system. Under the Constitution, a State Legislature consists of the Governor, the Assembly and the Council wherever there is one, just as Parliament consists of the President and the two Houses of Parliament. Unless the Governor as the executive head and the Speaker as the presiding officer of the legislature function justly within the powers assigned to them and cooperate with each other, it is difficult to work out successfully the legislative system. http://www.nalsartech.org/tiki/tiki-read_article.php?articleId=2015

NAIROBI INSTITUTE chairman Vincent Azavedo writes: "With just over four months to go before our Centenary Party, the time has come to prepare in earnest and to put the final touches into place for this historic event. All the hard work of the past two years will come to fruition with the various functions planned by our Centenary Celebrations Organising Committee, in May and June and culminating with the grand anniversary ball on the 11th of June 2005. I would like to urge as many of our past members and friends from far and wide now settled in Britain, Canada, the USA, Australia, India and our East African neighbours to join us for the milestone celebrations. Kenya has been home not only to the present membership of the Nairobi Institute (formerly the Goan Institute) but also to the wider Goan Community since the turn of the 20th Century. Taking this opportunity to visit Kenya will surely prove a very nostalgic experience."
LISTING OF GOAN CHRISTIAN NAMES: Dr Neil de Jesus Rangel is compiling a listing of Goan Christian names. For details, or a copy of the same (electronic), contact him at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Says he: "The problem still remains of identifying what truly constitutes a Goan name, spellings. Perhaps there will be many who can help. It has taken a terribly long lime getting this list in place: unfortunately names will have been lost for posterity unless we do a search of church records and tombstones."
