WESTERN GRID ON THE VERGE OF COLLAPSE: Powergrid Corporation of India Ltd's Western region Grid is on the verge of a collapse with all of its five constituent States (including Goa) overdrawing power in the range of 100-250 mw each at any given time thereby forcing the frequency to dip below the safety level of 49 hz. "If the member States continue with their indiscipline, then the entire region will suffer and the July 30 collapse will recur again, plunging all of them into darkness," warned PGCIL official Anjan Roy. BULLET TRAIN'S TRIAL RUN: The trial run of the much awaited Bullet train will most likely begin this month, according to Konkan Railway Corporation public relation manager, Baban Ghatge. It may be noted that KRC carried out necessary changes of rail track for the running of the train, which will have a speed of 150 km per hour. The trial run will be carried from Roha to Margao. (GT)

PLEA AGAINST 'ATTACK' ON FARMING: Farmers in Carambolim turned a visit of some local politicians to promote agriculture and hybrid varieties of rice to good use by speaking about the 'attack' on their traditional occupation by the government and 'terrorists'. (GT)

HANDICAPPED GIRL KILLED IN MISHAP: Sumitra Munappa, a 10-year-old deaf girl from a poor family was crushed to death on Friday after she was run over by a truck at Inanvaddo near the Mapusa Church complex. The vehicle was set in reverse motion as the driver was attempting to start the vehicle. (H)

GHOST-PHONE RUMOURS IN SALIGAO: According to a rumour, a "ghost" answers the phone when one rings up a certain number starting with 27xxxx, the Saligao telephone exchange number. "We have been harassed by these phone calls. Last night, till 11 pm we kept getting calls asking for information about the 'bhoot' (ghost)," said villager Gordon Vaz, one of those plagued by the rumours. Nobody knows how the rumours began. (H) Almost every student from almost every school in Bardez seems to know about the "ghost number".

SUSPENSION OF DRIVING LICENCES? Taking serious note of the spurt in road accidents, the South Goa District Road Safety Committee has strongly recommended suspending the driving licences of drivers involved in fatal and grave accidents. (H)

SOCIALIST MOVEMENT: While presiding over the Jaiprakash Narayan birth centenary programme in Panaji, the president of Goa Freedom fighters' Association, Mr Naguesh Karmali, said that the relevance of the countrywide agitation launched against the emergency rule in 1975, by the revered socialist leader, Jaiprakash Narayan, is more poignantly felt in today's times, when we are facing an 'undeclared emergency' situation, in Goa and rest of the country. ROBBING SPREE: It has been a robbing spree for some unidentified persons at the Corlim industrial estate during the past two days with several establishments suffering the brunt of their nocturnal activity. (GT)

GERMAN ARRESTED: The Vasco police yesterday arrested Mr Thomas Hallman, a German national, for over-staying in the country without proper travel documents. (NT)

COP RETURNS WITH STOLEN PROPERTY: DySP Umesh Gaonkar has returned to Goa with the stolen property worth Rs.5 lakh from Uttar Pradesh. It may be recalled that he had air-dashed to Bisnoor along with Ajutddin Noorani, Margao, to identify the gold ornaments robbed from Noorani's residence on 20 September. (GT)

HEADMASTER'S CONVICTION UPHELD: The Bombay High Court at Goa upheld the conviction of a headmaster, Mahaveer Hudda, who was accused of outraging the modesty of a minor student of a primary school at Satari on 17 March 1997. He has been sentenced to undergo six month imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs.5000, which will be awarded to the victim. (GT)

PERNEM CIVIC CHIEF RESIGNS: In a sudden move, Pernem Municipal Council chairperson Ujwala Vishwanath Tirodkar yesterday tendered her resignation, to protest against the alleged misbehaviour of the chief officer and municipal staff. (H)

EXCISE EARNING: The Excise Department is hoping to rake in more revenue and hopes to collect Rs.60 crore during the current financial year. The department had managed to collect about Rs.46 crore during the last financial year. (GT)

VICTORIA SEEKS DIVERSION OF HEAVY TRAFFIC: The Santa Cruz MLA, Victoria Fernandes, has demanded the diversion of heavy vehicles passing through Chimbel-Merces road to some other alternative route, claiming that the vehicles apart from damaging the electrical, telephone poles and wires, also possess risk to the safety of the residents from the area. There is also a possibility of major accidents, involving tankers carrying hazardous materials, she said in a representation the Transport minister. (H)

TAX ON MILK PRODUCTS: The one per cent tax imposed recently by the Goa Agriculture Market Produce Committee, Margao, on the milk products being brought to Goa, is likely to yield a revenue of over Rs.1.30 lakh to its treasury. Goa largely depend on milk and milk products from Karnataka and Maharashtra. (GT)

SUSPECTED ANTHRAX ENVELOPE: The State Directorate of Health Services has referred the postal envelope (received by Ms Concea Pereira) containing the white powder, suspected to be anthrax, to the Haffkine Institute In Mumbai for verification. (H)

ORLIM FEAST: The picturesque village of Orlim in Salcete will celebrate the feast of its patron St Michael de Archangel on October 13. The local church was built in the 15th century by the Jesuits at the request of the locals, who, it is said, found the coconuts full of maggots when they refused a glass of water to the first Jesuits who visited the place.
