I would also like to switch to the HR datastore. I am just in
development and do not have any data that I need to keep.
Can I clear out my test data and switch my current app?
Or can I delete my app and then recreate it with the same name but
using the HR datastore?

The logging/query idea is probably the best workaround, but I don't have
such a client to do this querying. If I did, I'd just host my app on it :)
You could schedule a cron job in GAE that tickled your app. If it ran
often enough it might keep it resident.
