It was the combination of a css capitalization mistake (which may not have
mattered) and the fact that I was pulling in the GWT css which overwrote my
css. Since gwt was loading the css, I saw that slight gap between my css
being applied and then disappearing.

I might guess that you're pulling in additional CSS after yours. Use
Firebug in webmode to inspect the CSS. It will tell you were all the CSS
rules
