Navelim Lift Fr. Deniz Trophy
Manama: Navelim became the first team to inscribe their name on the Father Felicio Diniz Rolling Trophy of the Bahrain Goans Seven A Side Football League. In the penultimate round of matches played at the Al Qadisiyia ground in Salmaniya, Navelim clinched the title defeating second placed Canacona 4 - 2 in a pulsating encounter. Oliver D'Souza headed in an early goal to put Canacona ahead, but the Navelim team comprising mainly of former senior division players from Goa bounced back with two goals from their skipper Brian Fernandes.
Henry Fernandes and diminutive striker Emidio Fernandes added one each. Marcal Barretto scored the other goal for Canacona. The defeat of Canacona on 22 points at the hands of Navelim, has opened the opportunities for Verna and Chinchinim to occupy the second place with the last round of matches yet to be played. Verna cruised past Benaulim 4 - 0 to take their tally to 22 points. Agnelo Misquita scored a brace while Joaquim Fernandes and Gabriel Felizardo also got their names on the score sheet.
Chinchinim registered the highest score of the league drubbing a depleted
Tivim 10 - 0 to take their tally to 21 points. The highlights of the match were hatricks for Chinchinim by Jimmy D'Costa and Irineu D'Costa (4 goals). Iris Fernandes, Edward Sequiera and Nazareth Gomes were the other scorers for Chinchinim. Margao dented the slim hopes of Vasco for a second place defeating them 3 - 1. Play maker Renzo D'Cunha found the net twice and Philip Coelho added one for Margao. Richard D'Souza scored the consolation goal for Vasco.
There were no matches on Saturday as the Goans in Bahrain celebrated the feast and 500th birth anniversary of Saint Francis Xavier with a mass in Konkani at the Sacred Heart Church at 7.45 p.m.
The last round of matches will be played on Wednesday.
Meanwhile Bahrain Goans will organise the prize distribution and social gathering for all the participating teams of the league on December 14, 2005 at the Anarath Banquet Hall in Hoora at 8.00 p.m.
