Player had heart attack: police

A SOCCER association in southern India has been accused of negligence in the on-field death of a Brazilian striker, a news report said today.
Cristiano de Lima Junior, who played for the Dempo Sports Club of Goa in India's domestic tournaments, died on Sunday during the Federation Cup final.
De Lima, 25, collided with goalkeeper Subrata Paul from the Mohun Bagan club and collapsed after slotting a goal. He scored twice for Dempo in the game.
Police in the southern Indian city of Bangalore today registered a case of negligence against tournament organiser Karnataka State Football Association, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.
Dempo's coach Armando Colaco claimed the delay in providing medical aid to de Lima had caused his death.
The Karnataka soccer association rejected the allegation as baseless, claiming two doctors were on duty on the pitch.
Bangalore's police commissioner, S. Mariswamy, said the post-mortem revealed that de Lima died of cardiac arrest. There was no proof that his death occurred because of the collision with the goalkeeper Paul.
"He died of cardiac arrest, he died on the spot," said Mariswamy.
The captain of India's national soccer team, Bhaichung Bhutia, blasted Paul for the foul against de Lima, and called for the goalkeeper's suspension.
De Lima's body was flown from Bangalore to the western Indian city of Goa from where it will be taken back to Brazil.
The current season was de Lima's first with Dempo and his second in India. He played for East Bengal, another top team, last year.
