                    REFLECTION - JESUS' CALL
====================================================================
Jesus  called  Matthew  while  he  was  at  his work,  and  he left
everything and followed the Lord.  In this he was no different from
the other disciples, but his case was rather more surprising. While
Jesus' first disciples were ordinary fishermen, Matthew belonged to
a  group  that  was  shunned by devout people.  Tax collectors were
unpopular because they worked for the Romans and  tended to use the
opportunity to line  their  own pockets. Even honest tax collectors
are never the most popular people in society, and we have no reason
to think that Matthew was better than most of his colleagues.

The Pharisees saw in Matthew someone to condemn, rather than someone
in  need  of  help.  They were more concerned with preserving their
own  purity  than  with  helping  those  most  in need of spiritual
nourishment;  but  Jesus  saw  in  Matthew  a human being who could
repent and follow Him.  Jesus calls us where we are, whoever we are
and whatever we do.  We do not  have to be virtuous before He calls
us; on the contrary, it  is  because we are sinners that we need to
turn to Him for help.  It is  just as well for all of us that Jesus
came into  the  world to save sinners, and loves us the same way no
matter how many sins we have committed.

Jesus gave the perfect answer to the Pharisees.  We cannot disagree
that  it  is  the sick  who most need a doctor, the sinful who most
need Jesus Christ.  Yet we do not always live as if this were true.
Christians can easily end up thinking more  like the Pharisees than
Christ,  regarding  themselves  as  more  righteous than others and
only spending  time with those who are (at least outwardly) upright
and religious.

Would  we  have  been among those who wondered why Jesus spent time
with such sinful people?  In  our own society there are many people
who are condemned and marginalized.  Do  we reach  out to  them and
seek to bring  them  God's  love?  Do we go  beyond our comfortable
circle of friends and  fellow  Christians, and  look for  those who
most need the healing that only Jesus can bring?   Let  us  ask the
Lord  in  His  call  to  us to help us recognize our own sinfulness
and  need  for  forgiveness,  and  extend  His  mercy  to all those
enslaved by sin, so that we can then rejoice with them  in the fact
that Jesus came into this world to save sinners.
