========================================================================================================================================= REFLECTION - OUR JUDGEMENTS AND GOD'S MERCY
=========================================================================================================================================What does it mean to be merciful as God is merciful? We know that
God's mercy is infinite and unfailing. We have done nothing to
deserve mercy, yet He is willing to show it to us. We can rejoice
that this is so, for if God judged us as we deserved we would all
be punished. He showed His great mercy in sending His Son to die
for us on the Cross so that we might be saved and reconciled to
Him. However often we disobey and ignore Him, He does not abandon
us but pursues us with loving tenderness; and when we turn back to
Him in repentance, He receives us with joy and remembers our sin
no more.
This is far from how we often are in our dealings with others. It
is a human tendency to judge others harshly, and even to enjoy
criticizing them and analysing their faults. We can all find
ourselves doing this almost without being aware of it. The media
often condemns people, and we all get caught up in it, to some
degree or other. Yet as Christians we should remember that we do
not know the hearts of others, or the full circumstances of their
actions. This does not mean we shouln't condemn evil, but we
should reserve judgement on those who carry it out. We are very
good at making excuses for our own misdeeds, but at times too
quick to judge others when they do similar things. Only God can
know what is in a person's heart, and only God has the right to
judge anyone.
Jesus warns us that if we judge others harshly we will be harshly
judged ourselves. How can we expect to receive forgiveness if we
are not forgiving to others? It may not be easy for us, but as we
come to know God's mercy towards us we are more likely to be
merciful to others. When we realize how much we have been forgiven,
and how little we deserve it, our hearts are softened and we become
more compasssionate. Let us pray for Jesus to give us merciful
hearts like His.
"Lord Jesus, we are often quick to condemn others, yet we expect
to be forgiven for our own sins. Grant us the humility to know how
much we have been forgiven, and to remember that we have no right
to judge others."
