REFLECTION - BE PREPARED!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
"Maranatha! Our Lord, come!" (1 Cor. 16:22)
As we begin a new liturgical year, the Church asks us: 'Are we
ready? Are you prepared to receive the Lord and go with Him when
He comes again? Advent is a time when the Lord wishes to make our
hearts ready.
Throughout all the changes and the turmoil of their history, God's
people longed for God to establish His kingdom of justice and
peace in their midst, but so often they were not ready. Human sin
and hardness of heart prevented God from establishing His kingdom
among them. What God wanted to do for His people, He could not do
- their hearts were not prepared. If they were to allow God to
reign in their hearts, they would need to repent and change. When
God would finally establish His kingdom it would be a time of
judgment and separation. Those who were ready would enter the
kingdom; those who were not ready would be excluded.
Jesus proclaimed the Good News and inaugurated God's kingdom. 'The
time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:14).
God was establishing His kingdom in the person of His Son. It was
a time of judgment and separation on the basis of belief in and
acceptance of Jesus. None the less, we know that God's kingdom
will not be fully established until the Lord comes again at the
end of time. When He does return - and we know neither the day nor
the hour - then again it will be a time of judgment and separation
for all. Those who are prepared will go with the Lord to be with
Him forever. Those who are not ready and prepared will be excluded.
At this season of Advent, God wishes to renew, refresh and
reinvigorate us. He is pouring out His grace upon His Church so
that our hearts can be changed and made ready. He is inviting us to
come closer to Him and grow in our relationship with Him. The Lord
will do this for us as we come to Him with humble and needy hearts,
confident that His grace and power can change us.
