Dear Kate, The best advice is, don't expect them to fit neatly, they never did! The pictures I've seen of extant garments with triangular gores, the top of the triangle tends to be flattened or rounded off. My technique is to sew the top couple of inches first, with the rest of the gore loose,

Unless the gore is very long, I prefer to sew by hand as it ie easier to manipulate the fabric. That's what I was going to say - sew it by hand. I do a lot of hand sewing when the going gets rough. And this garment was originally sewn by hand anyway. The sewing machine trades speed for
