Hi,
I need help with some measurements please.
I am basing my recreation on the book 'The working women's guide' p. 64 [plate
9, fig. 11,12].
I understand what yards are equal too in metric measurements but not nails. Can
any one shed light on what a nail is equal to in mm or cm?

I looked it up on Google books, on page 14 it handily has a conversion chart,
I've typed it out here.
2 1/4 inches (5.715 cm) make 1 nail
4 nails = 1 quarter (9 inches, 22.86 cm)
4 quarters = 1 yard (36)
5 quarters = 1 English ell
6 quarters = 1 French ell
I would say that the 3/4's on

Do you mean the 1838 Workwoman's Guide? I'll give you in inches and you
convert. Everything was done in quarters or eighths of a yard, and a nail
is half of an eighth, or 2

For a really neat site on historic and other measurements, check out
mathematician Russ Rowlett's Dictionary of Units of Measurement:

which even defines things like gnat's eye.

Thank you all for the information on kermes and fustic.
It does indeed relate to old dyes--the book in in question is set in the
fifteenth century, and the protagonist started life as a dyer's apprentice.

Books on historic clothing,
Just as an FYI, I had a *VERY* bad experience with these people.
I ordered quite a few samples of their red shades trying to get the exact
right color for a project. I even spoke in length with one of their rep and
sent emails with photos attached. I *STRESSED* that I was looking for true
reds
If they will sell it to you white so you can dye it yourself, I have no
problem with doing that.

Perhaps a sample through the snail mail would have been better as monitors
will vary in color. This of coarse does not excuse rude behavior.

Unfortunately I don't have the ability to dye the large amount of silk
velvet that I needed (15+ yards); I was willing to pay for the service they
claimed to offer to get the exact shade I needed. Lucky for me I have since
found the red silk velvet that I needed; now I just have to find the time
You are right, I might have sent them a color sample if they asked but what
killed me was I stressed how much I was not looking for 'pink' and I got
three different shades (along with some shade of red but none the color I
wanted) of salmon pink with 'pink' in the color title. :p

On Sat,
I found my velvet at a small private store (not a chain and not online) in
the fabric district near me (Dallas); of course I came across it when
looking for something else. ;)
I have a front load washer so no washer dyeing for me.
Feel free to purchase from them if you want. I was just sharing

I have been reading industry trade journal Clothes from 1968. There are a

Are there other trade journals that I should be looking for pre-1970?
Tons. I run across them a lot looking for dressmaking and tailoring
trade journals with patterns, which is usually what I stick to in terms
of trade journals. Though lately I've started collecting more old
