            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Tonight, the historic 110th Congress is in session. For the first time a woman
holds the gavel as Speaker of the House. And, after twelve years in the
minority, Democrats control both the House and Senate. Will the first 100
hours, 100 days, and the months that follow live up to the expectations?

MSNBC's coverage of this living history event continues at 5 and 7 PM EST as
Hardball heads to the halls of Congress to talk to some of the hottest movers
and shakers on Capitol Hill. Go to www.politics.msnbc.com the latest on this
and all of today's political news.

First up, Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) - in November Webb won a hotly contested Senate
race against former Sen. George Allen (R-VA) - tonight the freshman Senator
will be here to talk about Bush, Iraq, and his own plans for change. Then,
we'll take a closer look at Webb's life outside the public eye with MSNBC
Contributor Mike Barnicle.

Next, more news from Washington. Late Wednesday, John Negroponte, the first
Director of National Intelligence, announced he'll leave his post to become
Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice's Deputy
(http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16458602/). Today, the White House announced that
Harriet Miers, the President's legal counsel and his failed Supreme Court
nominee, will resign at the end of the month
(http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16470151/). We'll hear from former Rep. Susan
Molinari (R-NY) and Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen on the Bush
Administration shakeups and all things politics.

Plus, later in the show, we'll have more opening day analysis with the
Hardballers: the Hill's A.B. Stoddard and Chris Cillizza from
Washingtonpost.com. Click here to read the latest from Stoddard:
http://pundits.thehill.com/ and Cillizza:

And as Congress gets down to business, will the country see a new plan for
Iraq? What challenges will the new Speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi
(D-CA) the new majority party face (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16449288/)?
We'll talk to Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-PA). And who in the 110th is looking ahead
to '08? NBC's Mike Viqueira spent the day in the thick of the action on the
Hill, he'll tell us what he learned, and we'll also hear from Sen. Trent Lott
(R-MS) on the new Republican minority in the Senate.
